The Mount Vernon Statement: Fake Adolf Hitler Punks Conservatives

NEW YORK (CBS) When a group of conservatives united online to sign "The Mount Vernon Statement" they didn't expect Adolf Hitler to join the party.

According to the Christian Science Monitor, a group that hoped to find an audience for its values of small government and resistance to President Obama got punked by several pranksters who put down fake digital signatures. Adolph Hitler (spelled incorrectly) was the first to sign. "Joe Dufus" also got in on the act.

According to the petitions Web site, "The Mount Vernon Statement" defines the conservative movement's "principles, beliefs, and values in light of the challenges facing the country and the need for Constitutional Conservatism since the Obama administration came to power."

The Web page, designed to look like parchment paper, debuted Wednesday, according to OneNewsNow.com. Its name references the Virginia town where George Washington lived.

But organizers told the Christian Science Monitor they were forced to shut down the virtual signing feature, claiming a lot of the patriots signing the petition "were playing games and posting vulgarities."

Doesn't sound like the Internet at all.

Is unlimited military spending acceptable yet social programs must be fiscally starved? Of particular concern was mention of "nature's God" and "defense of...faith".
Our Founders understood religious precepts within government impinges liberties. The U.S. Constitution has no mention of "God" anywhere. Specifically, there shall be no religious test for public office or trust. Oddly, ?Statementists? disregard founding reference to our Bill of Rights, although amendment is a U.S. Constitution process. Perhaps the First Amendment?s freedom of religious belief (including none at all) conflicts with this ?nature?s God? and ?defense of faith??

Furthermore, what is social and cultural conservatism? Perhaps a veiled reference to "Christian values"? If so, which denominational interpretations of Christianity? Protestant, Baptist, Anglican, Lutheran, Quaker, Mennonite...the list is very long... Which edition of the Bible and which select sections? Unfortunately some Christians arrogantly and self-righteously believe that their "value system" or "culture" is uniquely superior. Christianity does not exclusively own reputable principles of humanity. These principles exist in a multitude of secular and religious societies.; Reply to this comment
