Ga. Infant Shot: Two teens sought in shooting that left mother wounded, infant dead, police say

(CBS/AP) BRUNSWICK, Ga. - Police are looking for two teens in connection to a Thursday shooting that left a mother wounded and her 1-year-old boy dead while she was pushing her baby in a stroller in a Georgia neighborhood.

Sherry West said she was walking near her home in the coastal city of Brunswick, about 80 miles south of Savannah, on Thursday morning when two boys approached her and demanded money. West said she insisted she didn't have any money and tried to protect her son, Antonio, before shots rang out.

The mother sustained a non-life threatening gunshot wound in the leg and was transported to the Southeast Georgia Health System for treatment, CBS affiliate WTOC reports. The infant was found dead at the scene.

"This is obviously a terrible day in Brunswick," Brunswick Mayor Bryan Thompson said. "Please call if you know something. You are complicit in this crime."

Officers from a SWAT team checked vacant houses as investigators tried to find possible witnesses. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources provided a helicopter to aid the search.

According to WTOC, Brunswick Police are searching for two black male suspects. The gunman is approximately 5 feet 7 inches tall, slender build, with curly hair, possibly between the ages of 13 and 15 years old, wearing a red shirt. His accomplice is short in stature, possibly between the ages of 10 and 12 years old, wearing a black shirt.

Anyone with information is asked to call Brunswick Police at 912-554-3645. There is a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.

Just like the billions being spent on spying on citizens is making us more free, the freest. I've about had it folks. It's a nice fantasy but actually doing it entails evil. I'm moving to New Hampshire or Maine. Somewhere where there's snaller ghettos. Not to sound racist, but I detest those who lump groups together such as 'all blacks', or 'all poor people' or 'all these drivers or those drivers'. It's like the idiots who think all black folk are on welfare. Guess what donkeys? More whites are on welfare than blacks. Look it up. READ. Try to understand reality. By the way, it's mostly policies of the right that have led us to this point in our history. The past 30 years of trickle down and deregulation have only a few more elections to go before the middle class is obliterated in what's left of America. (THANKS Ronnie!)

by bdoober8 March 22, 2013 5:58 PM EDT: What a toilet we live in. Two teens were arrested since this was written, one was identified because he was 17 but the other was not because he's 14. Note that there is no legal reason whatsoever that minors cannot be identified in the press, and in fact minors accused of capital crimes are identified in most countries - this is a matter or commerce, of the media not wanting to "upset people over their breakfast cereal," as they say in the news biz. But they should identify the sort of thing that would shoot a baby, and how it acquired a gun, although any shoe scraping with a few bucks can get a gun in this country.; Reply to this comment

Are you right about who pulls the trigger? Yea, but that doesn't mean SOME limitations for getting a gun aren't way overdue. I don't have all the answers but I do know someone who decides they need a gun to-day to defend themselves cannot count on the cops. What do you do when a person is this brutal, at this age? The legal code is too outdated to properly handle this level of inhumanity.

It may sound like wishing "an eye for an eye," but how can you possibly compensate for a dead child? Does a mother with a stroller now have to carry a gun in Georgia?

Was it that subway vigilante tears ago who responded "Sure, here, I've got some money for both of you..."
