"Octomom" Nadya Suleman accused of welfare fraud in Los Angeles, report says

(CBS) - "Octomom" Nadya Suleman is being accused of committing welfare fraud in Los Angeles County and may face jail time if convicted, according to a TMZ report.

TMZ reported Wednesday that the L.A. County Dept. of Welfare Fraud Prevention and Investigation received an allegation that the 37-year-old mother of 14 is collecting various forms of welfare, including food stamps.

Under California law, Suleman can collect welfare for her and her 14 children if she makes less than $119,000 in a calendar year. But as of 2012, she made nearly $200,000, TMZ reported.

An investigation is being conducted regarding the allegation. Suleman can be prosecuted if it is determined that she committed welfare fraud, and she could face more than three years in prison if convicted, according to TMZ.

Sulemom gained fame as "Octomom" when she became the mother of 14 children through repeated in vitro treatments. She gave birth to octuplets in January 2009, according to The Associated Press.

It is sad this girl knew she could not afford 14 children with no father in the picture. How can you be a good parent with 14 children on welfare.

This nut case should NEVER had been allowed to utilize fertility treatments, much less carried a litter of 8! by GODOG_THE_SUPREME_SHEHE March 23, 2013 1:40 PM EDT: There are a lot, A LOT, of women, like billions of them, in this world who raise their kids on much less than $10,000 per kid. And when you have 14 kids you can get great deals shopping in bulk at Costco.

Just think if every women had the right to have 14 kids and raise them on welfare what that would do to the world. The population would be 14 times greater than it is now, well over 90 billion people! Not even Costco could supply a global population of 90 billion people. it would result in genocide by starvation due to overpopulation.

Shouldn't everyone making less than $119k a year be entitled to welfare benefits? I had to read the article twice to believe what I was reading. I might have to a third time. If she goes to jail, are all of those kids going to be split up into foster homes? I have a feeling they're going to need major therapy when they reach adulthood.

At this point i feel sorry for her, she is doing everything she can to take care of the kids. She is going it solo and hope she can continue to make it. The gov just needs to leave her alone.

Or are the loopholes that big that a person like this can have 14 kids, with no support from any father, make a decent chunk of money by questionable means, and still game the welfare system?

And this mother of 14 went on welfare, while making $200,000 a year. Apparently not making enough money. Perhaps an additional source of income is required, such as posing for Playboy or Hustler. Or the red light district. Do you know how horrible this sounds? This woman is going to be charged with collecting welfare while doing these jobs such as porn films or topless posing. But doing these kinds of jobs is considered okay. Is there even a decent job she could get that would enable her to support 14 children?
