T.J. Lane, Ohio high school shooter, sentenced to life in prison without parole

T.J. Lane gave a Chardon courtroom the middle finger Tuesday morning during his sentencing hearing.

(CBS/AP) CHARDON, Ohio - T.J. Lane, the teenager convicted of the killing three students at an Ohio high school in a shooting rampage last year, has been sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Judge David L. Fuhry noted Lane's apparent lack of remorse and motive as part of his reasoning for the sentence.

Lane, who pleaded guilty to aggravated murder and other charges, appeared in a Chardon court Tuesday morning wearing a white T-Shirt with the word "killer" written on it. During the hearing, Lane also gave the courtroom the middle finger.

The three students who were wounded and relatives of the slain students were offered the chance to address the judge before the sentencing. Relatives of the slain students indicated earlier they want Lane to get the maximum sentence.

The mother of Daniel Parmertor, one of the students killed in the attack, urged the judge to sentence Lane harshly, saying, "I want him to suffer the rest of his life, the way I suffer the rest of my life without Danny."

On Feb. 26, Lane pleaded guilty to three counts of aggravated murder, two counts of attempted aggravated murder and one count of felonious assault. Daniel Parmertor and Demetrius Hewlin, both 16, and Russell King Jr., 17, were killed in the Feb. 27, 2012, rampage. Three others were seriously injured.

Lane could not have received the death penalty because he was 17 at the time of the crimes.

Lane attended an alternative school for students who haven't done well in traditional schools. He was at Chardon High School waiting for a bus there when he opened fire.

Aint he a piece of work - I get so angry just looking at this guy - in a world full of so much news, and bad news and tragedy - rarely am I moved....sort of numbed out most of the time

But this guy just smashes through all that - makes me wish I could personally kick this guys head into smithereens...and then some

One problem is, we citizens will be paying $40,000 per year to feed and house him. He should be made to do hard labor. By the time he is 80, he will have cost us upwards of $2,400,000.

by TimeToEvolve March 20, 2013 2:53 PM EDT: I did not see anything in the article about whose gun it was, how he got it, if anyone else was being prosecuted for giving or selling him the gun or anything about his home life (whether he had a broken home, was watching a lot of TV or playing violent games, etc.). I think those questions are the most important things to answer for future knowledge and education.; Reply to this comment
