Alabama Standoff: Photo released of Jimmy Lee Dykes, man accused of holding 5-year-old hostage

(CBS/AP) MIDLAND CITY, Ala. - Police have released a photo of the man they say is holding a 5-year-old boy hostage in an underground bunker on his rural Alabama property.

Jimmy Lee Dykes, 65, allegedly shot a school bus driver to death Tuesday, grabbed the kindergartner, and slipped into the bunker, which reportedly has electricity, food, and TV.

The standoff between police and Dykes dragged into a fourth day on Friday, as authorities sought to continue delicate conversations with the man through a pipe and worked to safely end the tense situation.

Police have delivered the boy's medication through a 4-inch-wide ventilation pipe leading to the bunker.

Hostage negotiators have used the pipe to talk to the gunman, identified by neighbors as Jimmy Lee Dykes, but investigators have been tightlipped about their conversations.

by andie52 February 2, 2013 7:43 AM EST: They probably have little to say at this point and couldn't possibly know for sure if that child has received his medication,has been properly fed or if he will even eat. After all this time odds are he's soiled and terrified This is akin to torture,managing a normal child at that age is a challenge and one with Asperger Syndrome and Attention Deficit Disorder would be almost impossible for anyone who doesn't have experience with these disorders.This monster is enjoying all of the attention he is getting and will never surrender to the police. Without sending a camera down that pipe they are flying blind. I hope that someone comes up with an answer before it's too late for that little boy.; Reply to this comment


by ogletree47 February 2, 2013 6:14 AM EST: I would say, "Alabama. Enough said," but I can't stop there. There are some really good people living in Alabama. My family still lives there, and none of them have extreme views about government. I don't know from what place this man's troubled thinking is born. If I say that this man's thinking is coerced by and affected by people that are anti-government, should I believe that kids who shoot up schools get their ideas from video games? Different media outlets report these issues in much different ways. I don't know what to believe.; Reply to this comment


by lami987 February 1, 2013 11:17 PM EST: Ban assault weapons would be more reasonable than mental tests for all gun owners. Besides mental tests are not at all reliable even if carried out every year. A sane person can turn insane in a hurry when any right trigger was pulled. Sadly nobody knows what that trigger could be. Usually a shooter is called insane only after the shooting is done and is too late to do any good. Certainly non assault weapons can also do a lot of damage but not as much as assault weapons. For those who insist on using assault weapons they can volunteer to fight in Afganistan where they really contribute to freedom of this country.; Reply to this comment

The NRA is one of the most patriotic, law abiding, pro law enforcement, pro freedom organizations in the world. We love our country and our freedoms more then anyone and will let nothing stand in the way of protecting that freedom.
