Nanny charged in connection with death of Massachusetts infant

(CBS/AP) BOSTON - Aisling McCarthy Brady, a nanny from Ireland living in Quincy, Mass., was arrested Monday in connection with the death of a one-year-old girl who was in her care. Authorities allege the child was assaulted by the nanny before she died, CBS Boston reports.

According to the station, Brady, 34, hid behind a wall as she pleaded not guilty Tuesday to assault and battery on a child, causing injury. Authorities said she could be charged with murder after an autopsy is completed on Rehma Sabir, a Cambridge, Mass. infant who was hospitalized with head injuries on Jan. 14 - her first birthday - and died on Jan. 16.

Doctors at Boston Children's Hospital, where Sabir was treated, said the child suffered from hemorrhaging and swelling of the brain and also had multiple bone fractures that were healing, CBS Boston reports.

In court documents outlined Tuesday, state police said they found blood-stained baby wipes discarded in a diaper pail and a blood-stained blanket and pillow in a crib in the child's bedroom.

Brady's lawyer maintains the nanny had no role in the baby's death, although authorities say she was the only one home when the child's injuries occurred, the station reports.

Her bail is set at $500,000.

Brady, a nanny for the past 13 years, has had a few previous run-ins with the law, the station reports. In 2005, a man took out a restraining order against her after a bar fight. In 2007, she faced an assault charge after another bar brawl. That charge was later dropped because the victim wouldn't testify. In 2012, a woman took out a restraining order against her. And two days before the baby's death, four separate loud noise complaints were made in connection with her.

CBS Boston reports the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE) said Tuesday that Brady entered the United States from Dublin, Ireland on Aug. 11, 2002, as part of the Visa Waiver Program that allows visitors to stay in the United States for 90 days without a visa.

According to the station, ICE says Brady never left and has been in the U.S. for a decade.
