Ariz. woman accidentally shoots, kills brother while posing for pictures on New Year's Eve

(CBS/KPHO) PHOENIX - Police say a 19-year-old Arizona woman accidentally shot her 22-year-old brother to death on New Year's Eve while the two were posing with a gun for pictures.

Manual Ortiz died after being shot by his sister, identified by various media reports as Savannah Ramirez, at an apartment in Phoenix around 6 a.m. Monday, CBS affiliate KPHO reports.

According to the station, Ortiz and his sister had arrived at the apartment after a party at another location and began playing with a handgun, according to Sgt. Steve Martos of the Phoenix Police Department.

The pair were posing for photographs with the gun when it discharged and Ortiz was struck by the bullet, Martos reportedly said. There were three other people in the apartment, one of whom witnessed the shooting. The other two people were in a different room.

According to KPHO, Martos says the 19-year-old was questioned and released pending further investigation and test results. However, according to ABC, Martos said that if toxicology results show that Ortiz's sister was intoxicated at the time of the accident, she would likely be charged with manslaughter.

"Every New Year's Eve this sister will be thinking about this the rest of her life," Martos said, according to KPHO.

People like the ones commenting on this article both pro or con should not have guns, their lives and the lives of their loved ones that they would try to protect are not that important...get over yourselves! Just saying! The 2nd amendment applies to only the important people in this country of which you nor I are them...; Reply to this comment

by JV1970 January 4, 2013 4:02 AM EST: Back in the 70's my cousin was in the Army and was stationed in Germany. One day he and some of his friends were out in the field practicing maneuvers. My cousin was ordered to pick up their shell casings. Just to scare him his friends decided to fire one of their guns. They said that they thought that particular shell had already been fired and was a "dud".

They were wrong! It was a live shell and my cousin was shot. He went into shock on the way to the hospital and was dead on arrival. He was just two weeks short of his 21 birthday.

These were trained soldiers who knew just about all there is to know about guns but they decided to act like a bunch of six year olds out for a laugh and playing with a gun and the result was my cousin was killed.; Reply to this comment

Wow, I figured I'd see all sorts of posts about how we need gun control and all that crap again. But I'm confused as to why we hear it when there's mass deaths, but when there's only one, hardly anyone talks about it. Is it that one person isn't as important as a bunch?

Honestly, we just need idiot control. Isolate all the idiots from the general population and we'll all be fine. They won't have access to weapons or vehicles, and the rest of us will do just great.
