Apparently armed man tries to enter suburban New York middle school, prompts security scare

(CBS/WCBS) NEW YORK - An apparently armed man tried to enter a middle school in Larchmont, N.Y., in Westchester County Thursday, prompting a security scare as schools in the area went into a "lock-out."

According to CBS New York, the Mamoroneck School District alerted parents that the man attempted to enter Hommocks Middle School through a locked door at a pool entrance.

A district spokesperson reportedly said the man was confronted by a security guard and claimed he was looking for the lost and found to get something he left behind over the weekend when the school pool was open to the public.

CBS New York reports that the school security guard noticed that the man appeared to be carrying a weapon beneath his coat. The unidentified man explained to the guard that he was carrying the gun because he also works in security, according to the Mamaroneck School District.

The security guard told the man he couldn't stay on school grounds, and the man immediately left, reports CBS New York.

Police said the unknown man made no threats and was described as "pleasant," LoHud.com reported.

CBS New York reports police were called and responded to the school, the Mamaroneck School District said. The district initiated a "lock-out," with no one allowed to leave or enter the school buildings. All afternoon and evening afterschool activities were canceled as a precaution. The district said it expected to have a police presence at the school tomorrow.
