Suffolk County police say the fire occurred two days after Barth allegedly choked Jason Campbell, his 35-year-old neighbor.
Police reportedly found a gas can on the front lawn of Barth's home after being called to the scene around 5:50 p.m. Wednesday. The fire is being investigated as arson.
According to Newsday, police declined to say who owned the Ford Explorer but said Barth has been known to drive it.
Barth was arrested on Monday and charged with second-degree murder in connection with Campbell's slaying.
Authorities say Campbell's body was found hidden in Barth's bedroom closet.
Barth has pleaded not guilty and is being held without bail.
