UPS driver caught on video stealing Christmas gift in Texas

(CBS) HOUSTON - A UPS delivery man is under arrest after a Houston family's home surveillance camera caught him stealing a Christmas package from their doorstep, CBS affiliate KHOU reports.

Al and Sandra Alverson were expecting two Christmas gifts to be delivered on Wednesday, but when they got home, one of them - containing an iPad mini - wasn't there. They thought it was strange because Federal Express emailed them a notification confirming the package had been dropped off earlier that morning, the station reports.

"It said it was delivered at 9:29a.m.," Al Alverson told KHOU. "So I go up and I have a DVR with all the cameras on it to take a look."

Sure enough, at 9:39 a.m. he saw Federal Express drop off the package, containing the iPad he planned on gifting to his daughter.

As he continued to search the video, he saw a UPS worker arrive at 1:15p.m. and drop off the second package they were expecting. But, two minutes after dropping off the package, the UPS employee returns.

"I said, 'oh my god,' it is the UPS guy," Alverson told KHOU.

The video shows the driver returning and taking the FedEx package containing the iPad.

The Alversons told KHOU they contacted UPS but weren't getting any answers, so they decided to post the video on YouTube.

After the video gained some attention, Alverson told the station he got a phone call from UPS and they sent him a replacement iPad right away.

UPS told KHOU that they identified the employee and fired him. They also confirmed that the man was arrested Thursday by the Harris County Sheriff's Office and charged with theft.

by ReckonedTruth December 23, 2012 6:48 PM EST: ..this type of thing happens all the time around this time of year..I'm not excusing the UPS driver at all because for starters-he's not the only one as a delivery courier to steal.... but I'm wondering why would anyone purchase such an expensive item..for home delivery w/o signature release? This should be totally fine for the UPS driver to steal the IPAD!
It is just part of Slavery Reparations! You white massers of Texas deserve it!

He seemed real relaxed when he did this, not nervous at all. The company needs to review previous complaints of 'missing' packages on this criminal's route to connect the dots.

Why are they taking revenge on the UPS guy? I ask that because when a vicious killer is convicted and sentenced to death, there are some individuals who insist that to do so is taking revenge on the killer. So, if that is revenge, then firing him arresting him is also taking revenge on the thief.

by nhirsch December 21, 2012 11:27 PM EST: i don't understand the "logic" of that comment. My opinion is the guy should be charged and fired. It's a theft which is a crime and I certainly don't want UPS drivers coming to my home that take packages that might be at my door. And if I were a UPS executive, I sure as heck wouldn't want anyone like that working for me.
