Oregon inmate released, robs bank within hour, police say

(CBS/AP) EUGENE, Ore. - Authorities are accusing a man of robbing an Oregon bank less than an hour after he was released from jail due to budget cuts.

The Register-Guard reports that Eugene police arrested 33-year-old Christopher Franklin Weaver shortly after a Thursday robbery at a Pacific Continental Bank branch. He was returned to jail.

Weaver was among about 30 inmates released from the Lane County Jail at 11 a.m. Nov. 29. The bank was robbed at 11:55 a.m. the same day.

County sheriff's Sgt. Carrie Carver says "this isn't necessarily a worst-case scenario, but it's a very bad case."

Weaver was previously jailed on a parole violation stemming from a conviction for second-degree sexual abuse.

Sheriff Tom Turner said recently he needed to withdraw several dozen jail beds because federal demand for space in the jail had decreased, meaning that the county was receiving less money.

by thechooch1 December 1, 2012 10:25 AM EST: The problem I see is that Bank robbers, sex offenders, even people that have committed violent crimes are released. However those that were put in jail on mandated sentences for using drugs and are non violent are kept in jail. Where is the logic in that?

Secondly, once someone serves their time, is rehabilitated and released then commits another crime, they are career criminals. The shouldn't be released again to commit more crimes.; Reply to this comment

by thechooch1 December 1, 2012 10:28 AM EST: tsigili, I don't know about "corrupt" but this individual committed a crime, was caught, tried and convicted. Nothing corrupt there. Problem is that we have so many criminals that we don't have jail space for all of them to serve their time. No one wants a prison in their neighborhood or their taxes to go up to build more cells. So this is the result.

This is exactly the reason Sheriff Joe put up the tent city jails in Phoenix. He vowed when elected he would never release a criminal early because of overcrowding. Maybe other municipalities should learn from him

When a prison needs space do like they do in China give the excess prisoners a bullet in the head then bill their families for the bullet.
