Man stabbed outside 49ers game was targeted for wearing Dallas Cowboys jersey, cops say

San Francisco police say a man wearing a Dallas Cowboys jersey was stabbed Sunday outside Candlestick Park where the hometown 49ers played the New York Giants.

(CBS) SAN FRANCISCO - San Francisco police said Monday that the victim of a stabbing incident outside Candlestick Park Sunday before the 49ers-New York Giants NFL game was targeted because he was wearing a Dallas Cowboys jersey.

Previous reports indicated everyone involved was a 49ers fan. Two men have been arrested.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that Kristopher Viana, 22, and Alexandro Arguelles, 30, were arrested after allegedely attacking a 27-year-old resident of Elk Grove as he walked with his friends to the game at around 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

According to investigators, Viana and Arguelles verbally harassed the man because of his Cowboys jersey. The argument quickly escalated to a physical fight which then took a more violent turn when Viana and Arguelles left and allegedly returned with a knife.

Police said that Viana tried to stab the man's girlfriend and another man before stabbing the victim. Arguelles allegedly punched another person as he and Viana fled. They were arrested only a few minutes later and booked into county jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and conspiracy.

The victim, whose name has not been released, is recovering at a hospital, said police spokesman Sgt. Michael Andraychak.
