(CBS/AP) DALLAS - Elizabeth Escalona, a Dallas mother, has been sentenced to 99 years in prison for beating her two-year-old daughter and gluing the child's hands to a wall.

Escalona faced from probation to life in prison, with prosecutors seeking 45 years behind bars. A state district judge decided her sentence Friday.

Police say Escalona attacked two-year-old Jocelyn Cedillo because of potty training problems. The 23-year-old pleaded guilty in July to felony injury to a child.

Police records show Escalona's other children told authorities she kicked Jocelyn in the stomach and hit her with a jug in September 2011. They said Escalona glued Jocelyn's hands to the wall with a type of strong adhesive known as super glue.

Jocelyn suffered bleeding in her brain, multiple bruises and was in a coma for a couple of days.

When the grandmother rushed her to the hospital, the child was at deaths door, and luckily survived. She beat her child into a coma and left her to die. The courts aren't achieving anything profitable for society with this sentence. A 30 year sentence would make more sense.; Reply to this comment


by Watcher_Joelle October 14, 2012 3:08 PM EDT: Here is a person with 5 kids and obviously should not be a mother. But there is more here than written or seen in the news. And I have to ask, "Where were the "Children Services" people who look in and watch single mothers?"

I do think it sad, a person with psychological problems who was subjected to child abuse themselves previous to this despicable incident for which they have to take full responsibility.

99 years is harsh! I wonder if the judge would have carried out the same 99 year sentence to someone with a different social background with similar punishment circumstances? Just a thought!; Reply to this comment

Lucky taxpayers get to do that instead. Good thing she got sentenced to 99 years - at least she won't pop out any more kids for us to pay for.; Reply to this comment

This story is a prime example of why birth control should be included as free coverage on all insurance programs. Unfortunately, GOP presidential hopeful does not realize there are some parents that do not do children well. This woman appears to be one of them. It is too disturbing to think she is denial about her atrocious parenting style.

by gravytop October 14, 2012 6:34 AM EDT: Free birth control doesn't mean you can force someone to use birth control who doesn't want to. I have yet to see a report that this woman simply couldn't get the birth control she wanted.

by mamahobbs October 14, 2012 3:42 AM EDT: you are just as sick as her. SHE needs help? How about her baby that she beat so severely her BRAIN was bleeding? How about the little girl who spent several days in a COMA? You need a major reality check. I am sick of seeing these child beating wastes of sperm get slaps on the wrist and sent back out into the world just to repeat the behavior. And don't even go there with she is just stressed out. I have 3 kids, 6 and under, with one being mentally handicapped. I KNOW STRESS. I would NEVER super glue my TWO year old childs hands to the wall over potty training issues. Most kids are NOT potty trained at 2 anyway, and if they are they still have accidents every now and then. If there ever was a reason to have jails, this would be it.

I am disappointed that CBS doesn't show the face of the 2 year old innocent victim Jocelyn. In this case, the criminal is her own biological mother.
