Tyler Giuliano, masked teenage intruder, unknowingly shot dead by his father in Connecticut

(CBS) NEW FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Tyler Giuliano, a 15-year-old western Connecticut high school student, was unknowingly shot dead by his father, CBS New York reports.

At 1 a.m. on Thursday, a woman believed someone was trying to break into her New Fairfield home so she called her brother, Jeffrey Giuliano, who lives next door.

Giuliano charged across the lawn with his gun and confronted the individual dressed in black and wearing a ski mask, CBS New York reported. When Giuliano noticed there was a weapon in the masked intruder's hand, he fired and the intruder fell to the ground.

It was only then that Giuliano realized it was his own son who he had just shot and killed.

According to police, Jeffrey Giuliano, a fifth grade science teacher, was distraught when police arrived at the scene.

His son was pronounced dead at the scene.

"I can't imagine what he felt when he took the mask off," New Fairfield resident Tin DiKit told CBS New York.

With the community reportedly in shock, an open house at New Fairfield High was cancelled after classmates received the news.

"When I first received the call, needless to say, I've been in office eight years and you don't hear about such things in New Fairfield,"said First Selectman John Hodge.

And people want less gun control...Please, spare me the "right to bear arms" crap. Really? Have you heard of the NRA, The Constitution, the Civil War-Oh, thats right the 'gated communities' seemingly aren't affected by crime. You have one shot to make a quote, no condolences for the family, no sympathy...ironically, what this story told me that even though you "don't hear about such things" obviously 5th grade math teachers still own handguns and shoot them in your community.; Reply to this comment

kids make dumb mistakes. That does not mean they were raised wrong. None of us are perfect. It is awful that it was his own father that shot him and the poor man will never be the same. This is a tragedy and your unfeeling comments about the kid and how he was raised are awful. You have no moral compass and no compassion. He was 15 for crying out loud and no one knows why he was there so the comment about rape and murder is way out of line. We should all be supporting this poor father not making judgements on people and circumstances we do not even know.

If you had read about this family, you would have discovered that the boy had never been in trouble, even though he and his sister had been adopted by this family just 4 years ago. This loving, giving, father gave these children a good home. I don't know what Tyler was doing outside at 1 a.m., but do not attack the father, or the kid, for wrongdoing before you know the facts...

Like I said KNOW the facts before making assumptions. He didn't want to just kill HIS child. The child was a masked intruder with a weapon and when he received the phone call that his sisters life was in jeopardy he did what he thought was right. He ran to protect her and was going to be attacked by the person in a ski mask with a weapon. HE DID NOT KNOW IT WAS HIS SON YOU IDIOT! This is a tragedy.
