Judy Groomes, Air Force staff sergeant, allegedly gets husband to shoot her to avoid deployment

(CBS/AP) BOSSIER CITY, La. - Air Force staff sgt. Judy Groomes, a woman trying to avoid a military deployment, allegedly had her husband shoot her and then lied to investigators, telling them she'd been shot by an intruder.

Police say Judy Groomes, 25, was treated for wounds on both of her legs from one round from a handgun fired by her husband, 26-year-old Staff Sgt. Christopher Tyquan Groomes, reports CBS affiliate KSLA.

Both are active military based at nearby Barksdale Air Force Base. According to a statement from Barksdale, Judy Groomes was scheduled to be deployed to Southwest Asia in the coming months.

Groomes allegedly claimed an intruder shot her early Friday while her husband and two children slept. But police say she convinced her husband to shoot her to avoid military service.

Christopher Groomes was arrested on a gun charge. Judy Groomes faces a criminal mischief charge for allegedly filing a false police report.

I don't care if the people involved are black, white or polka dot. If you've signed up for the military and are receiving military pay and all the associated benefits (health insurance, pension, etc.) then DO YOUR DUTY and report for deployment. If you don't like the idea of being deployed then don't sign up. It's downright dishonest to expect us taxpayers to pony up for your wages & benefits and then have you decide you don't want to do what we've been paying you to do. You have a responsibility to fulfill your end of the bargain - quit trying to weasel out of it.

I see very little room here for comments and criticism from ANYONE that is NOT a veteran of U.S. Armed Forces.

Civilians know little or nothing about soldiers.

Unless you were there at Barksdale AFB with them, those making comments know nothing about these two or the who and why of ANY of this.

Compared to how the USMC, USA, and USN (Green-side) have it over there, what is that woman complaining about!? $$$, and cushy, Rear-Line living on an air-conditioned super-base with recreational facilities galore, away from the real action (I was over there on the Front lines, and those USAF'ers have it EASY). If she doesn't want to go there, she shouldn't of joined up; but I suspect she enlisted for the 'educational benefits'.; Reply to this comment
