Prison meth ring busted in Indiana, 40 accused, including corrections workers, feds say

(AP) INDIANAPOLIS - A federal indictment says 40 people are facing charges in connection to a methamphetamine ring that was run from at least two Indiana state prisons with the help of corrections officers.

An indictment unsealed Wednesday says the officers smuggled cell phones and controlled substances into the prisons. It also says three inmates are among those charged, including the alleged ringleader who's serving time for murder and attempted murder.

At least 17 people appeared in court in the case Wednesday in Indianapolis. Prosecutors argued that the defendants were flight risks, and the judge ordered they be held in custody.

The FBI had earlier declined to comment but confirmed that several people had been arrested after 300 agents spread out across the state in what a spokeswoman called "investigative activity."

by malcolm-kyle August 27, 2012 5:26 AM EDT: It's not even possible to keep drugs out of prisons, but prohibitionists wish to waste trillions of dollars in an utterly futile attempt to keep them off our streets.

When governments prohibit drugs they effectively and knowingly hand a monopoly on their sale to dangerous criminals and terrorists. Without a legal framework in which to operate, these black-market entities can always be expected to settle their disputes violently, while terrorizing many peaceful and innocent citizens in the process. Were the users of alcohol to blame for the St Valentines massacre in 1929? Of course not! It is just as naive to assume that one can compel all the users of Marijuana, Cocaine, or Meth to simply quit, as it is to assume that all the users of Alcohol should have stopped drinking after the introduction of alcohol prohibition in 1919.

Nobody can be expected to obey bad laws, like ones that infringe on logic as well as the fundamental right to decide on what medicine or poison an individual adult may, or may not, ingest. The violence and the deaths ultimately arising from such bad public policy should always rest squarely on the shoulders of those ignorant imbeciles who are responsible for implementing and supporting such foolishness.

If you support prohibition then you support bank-rolling criminals and terrorists. There's simply no other logical way of looking at it.; Reply to this comment

Not much to go on with such a short story at this time, but I'm sure the authorities and officers who are employed by this prison have a good understanding of what it's like for inmates to live here. Why on earth would they want to jeopardize their jobs to become inmates themselves? Perhaps this may be a very lenient place with free meals, room and board, plus a chance to set up and invest in their own lucrative business adventures.
