Girl, 6, found clinging to dead woman's body in NY lake, police say

(CBS/AP) CARMEL, NY - A 6-year-old girl was pulled to safety early Monday evening by boaters, after they found her clinging to a corpse in Putnam County's Lake Gleneida, according to local police.

Sgt. John Dearman of the Town of Carmel said that three people were fishing in the lake when they saw the child holding on to an unidentified floating object.

After realizing that the unidentified object was the corpse of a woman, they quickly pulled the girl to safety and called 911.

The New York City Department of Environmental Protection identified the woman Tuesday as 59-year-old Pamela Kaner of Brewster, N.Y.

The girl was taken to a local hospital, and was said to be unharmed.

It appeared that the two had been wading into the water before the woman's death. The Journal News reported that the woman was a friend of the girl's mother.

An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of Kaner's death. The follow-up investigation will be conducted by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection, according to CBS New York.

I can't believe all the sickos making stupid comments when the story here is so tragic. My heart aches for this little girl and this deceased woman. Note to all who made dumb and inconsiderate comments: Learn about empathy and compassion. Your turn will come when you will need others to show it to you. of course all the LIBS have to get on my case! it's cuz they know I have the FACTS on my side to back up my point that NObama is more responsible for this woman's death than anyone else. socialized medicine, the fed, fema, you name it. he's created a house of cards and low and behold, we suddenly find ourselves inside it! while it's crashing down! with us inside it!

by ampsanne August 7, 2012 4:51 PM EDT: All jumping to conclusions already. Especially the guy with the shovel. Most of those shovels that kids play with at the beach are made out of plastic. I'm sure a plastic shovel killed the lady. Don't know what the weather was but maybe a big wave came along and knocked the woman into the water, and she drowned that way. And the little girl hung onto her.But that's just another theory. Until we hear what she died from there's no use jumping to conclusions.; Reply to this comment

It may be just another case of a youth, with a shovel, going bad. If this alleged 6 year old was the last person to see the lady alive, that would make her a prime suspect. The authorities should look around for a hidden shovel. Stricter shovel control legislation is needed. I know, the article doesn't even mention a shovel. That makes me even more suspicious.
