(CBS News) The Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office in Colorado released the booking photo of movie theater shooting suspect James Holmes from when he was apprehended by police early Friday.

The 24-year-old is accused of opening fire at a movie theater in Aurora on a midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises," killing 12 and injuring 58, some critically.

The photo's release comes a few hours after Holmes made his first appearance in court in Centennial, Colo. Monday. Wearing orange-red hair and looking at times emotional and at other times bleary-eyed, Holmes sat in a maroon jailhouse jumpsuit as Chief Judge William Sylvester advised him of the case.

Authorities say Holmes is not cooperating and it could take months to learn what motivated the mass shooting spree.

by noduleata August 2, 2012 6:08 AM EDT: Looking at the dates on the last posts on blog after blog this story has gone cold already. The suppression of information, especially by the University is fueling conspiracy theories by the megaton. Just go through all the blogs. To so many Holmes is becoming a super hero, a patsy who has been set up, that the bloke in court is not Holmes and so on. This the very sort of thing that fed Holmes' paranoia and hatred of society in the first place, but THIS TIME it's made so much worse because of it's context within the nuerosciences, psychiatry etc. in a major University. I've researched schizophrenia for 40 years, plus having gone THROUGH it myself.

Thus I KNOW that it's not inherited, but trying to get this message across is like trying to move Mt Everest with a teaspoon. I see the stage being set for far worse massacres and soon, till finally there is civil war especially with very disenchanted, psychotic even, vets coming back from Iraq and Afghanistan to slums, mass unemployment, little or no assistance for PTSD and with BATTLE TRAINING.

What about if Holmes was so disturbed he actually thought he was doing good. What if he saw himself as some sort of left wing revolutionary. United States is itself so deranged that spawning psychotics like Holmes is inevitable. A nation drowning in religious fundamentalism, massive inequalities and guns. Gut rid of all that, beginning with the inequality, and massacres will become a thing of the past. The US has to put ITSELF on trial and fast before it's too bloody late.; Reply to this comment


by noduleata July 28, 2012 6:01 AM EDT: In cases like this noone will admit to having bullied him in the past, not even to themselves as that might mean they are culpable. He gets his degree with honors. That's just sticking to curriculum. Then he screws up doing his PhD when he has got to think for himself. What was the EXACT subject of his thesis. As HIS choice surely this would throw light on his state of mind. Did he spend all that time doing online videogames, or did he go online and be subject to merciless cyber bullying and ridicule trying to present new ideas in neurology. This is what I copped trying to present new ideas and if anything the moderator ENCOURAGED it. I can handle this but someone disturbed might not be able to.

NEW LAWS NEEDED TO DISCOURAGE ACTS OF VIOLENCE, MURDER

Take away the attention that murderers and other psychopaths seek, by NOT displaying their photos, thereby denying such murderers' and psychopaths' ability to make an issue for their fame and/or infamy, as well as their 'cause'. Otherwise we continue to accommodate these perpetrators by giving them the attention that they want.; Reply to this comment

Why is NOBODY in the USA talking about how to prevent crazy people like him from getting firearms in future? I'm in the UK and everyone is totally amazed that America is not even interested in doing ANYTHING about it..... AGAIN!

I saw a comparison o getting a gun to getting a drivers license.

Perhaps people should have to report in person and get an eye exam and a psychological evaluation every year to renew their ability to purchase a gun.
Of course that wouldn't stop them, they'd get ahold of one on the street anyway! : /; Reply to this comment

I think perhaps Americans LIKE society to be violent, primitive and crazy, just like it is in the movies.
