Jacob Whitfield Case: Teen charged with killing dad, stepmom in North Carolina, police say

Jacob Whitfield, 17, is accused in the shooting death of his father and stepmother

(CBS) WHITAKERS, N.C. - Police arrested 17-year-old Jacob Whitfield Sunday morning in the fatal shooting of his father and stepmother in their Whitakers home, CBS affiliate WRAL reports.

Police responded to a 911 call at the home at around 11:30 p.m. Saturday and arrived to find both victims dead at the scene. Police haven't released the names of the victims.

Five people were in the home at the time of the shooting, including Whitfield, a friend, his parents and his younger brother, police said. Whitfield lives in Virginia with his mother and comes to Whitakers periodically to visit his father and family.

Whitfield faces two murder charges and is placed in Nash County jail without bond. No other information, including a motive for the shooting, was released.

by Shir2 July 29, 2012 1:26 AM EDT: Yeah right. He doest sound mentally unstable, shocked or anything else except cold in his 911 call. I think this was a cold and calculated murder and he did it to get even with his father after he dumped his mother. What he "went through" is pretty much what all children whose parents got divorced went through. Most of them dont kill their parents.; Reply to this comment


by chriss_williams July 20, 2012 3:41 AM EDT: I also know Jacob, I went to school with him, had classes with him , and was a very good friend with him! He despised going to NC because his father eft him and his mother. He is a great guy, hes smart, and was emotionally ditraught. He was bound to snap eventually. This whole situatio could have been easily avoided by noticing the warning signs. He has been through alot of hardships in his life and I do not think he deserves prison, but I do STRONGLY recommend a Psychiatric ward to help him with his problems.
Before you people tal about throwing him the wolves, think about if you were in that situation and would you want to be overlooked as a vigilante, when you need help, not the gavel. Hopefully someone notices this comment and it helps him out because it would be very sad to lose a friend to such a unfortunate event. Thank you; Reply to this comment

I'm not saying that what he did was right but Jacob was DEFINITELY not Mentally stable. prison is not the right place for Jacob, its not going to help. it is said that one out of every 5 Americans suffer from mental illness..i guess he was that one. Jacob was a nice enough guy, but he probably just snapped. He should go to the mental hospital not to jail. He isnt mentally stable all the time.; Reply to this comment
