Indian man beheads daughter with sword in rage over her lifestyle, police say

(CBS/AP) JAIPUR, India - Police say a man chopped off his daughter's head with a sword and then paraded it through his village before surrendering to authorities in western India. He allegedly did this because he was upset over his daughter's lifestyle.

Marble miner Ogad Singh's 20-year-old daughter had been living with her parents in the Rajasthani village of Dungarji after leaving her husband two years ago.

Police Superintendent Umesh Ojha says Singh was upset by his daughter having affairs with men and became enraged when she eloped with one of them two weeks ago.

Ojha says Singh forced her to return home Sunday and beheaded her Monday with a sword.

Rapidly modernizing India faces increasing social clashes as youths resist traditions like arranged marriage or limits on women by venturing outside their parents' or husbands' homes.

All societies, cultures and religious communities must come to respect women as well as the value of all human life. Too often, women across the globe are the victims of violence in the name of family, honor, pride and simple psychopathic rage. Diem saw to it that U.S. aid, food, technical and general assistance was given to Catholics alone, Buddhist individuals and villages were ignored or had to pay for the food aids which were given to Catholics for free. The only religious denomination to be supported was Roman Catholicism.
The Vietnamese McCarthyism turned even more vicious than its American counterpart. By 1956 Diem promulgated a presidential order which read:

"Individuals considered dangerous to the national defense and common security may be confined by executive order, to a concentration camp."

Supposedly to fight communism, thousands of Buddhist protesters and monks were imprisoned in "detention camps." Out of protest dozens of Buddhist teachers - male and female - and monks poured gasoline over themselves and burned themselves. (Note that Buddhists burned themselves: in comparison Christians tend to burn others). Meanwhile some of the prison camps, which in the meantime were filled with Protestant and even Catholic protesters as well, had turned into no-nonsense death camps. It is estimated that during this period of terror (1955-1960) at least 24,000 were wounded - mostly in street riots - 80,000 people were executed, 275,000 had been detained or tortured, and about 500,000 were sent to concentration or detention camps.

Not sure how this is newsworthy to an American general news audience.

India is a developing country of 1 billion people and the number who live on less than $1 per day is in the hundreds of millions. That this occured isn't really news... that it does not occur more frequently is probably more remarkable.

What landed it onto the home page of a major news site is xenophobia.

by Mikey_Mo June 19, 2012 6:56 AM EDT: A person that thinks his pride is more important than anything else. Can he live with himself now or did he destroy himself from within. If he can live with that, I say he still very dangerous, other wise he would of killed himself too.
Pride is about oneself and a illusion. Makes you feel like your a god, at least in ones own circle and the fact he didn't want to keep it under control and he is still around, is the scary part.

Not at all surprising. The UN has just produced a report accusing India of being the world's worst country to an infant girl. Scratch the surface of the Western hype -- and it is Western only; Asian countries are far less fascinated by India -- and what one sees is a kind of brutish conservatism that people associate with the likes of the Taleban.

by RFS1987 June 19, 2012 2:33 AM EDT: To those engaging in anti-Islam baiting: the killer father is probably not Muslim, but Sikh. Singh is a traditionally Sikh name and the fact that the girl was killed with a sword is also indicative of her father's religion. The sword is a religious symbol for Sikhs. Sikhs in the UK are the only ethnic/religious group who can openly carry swords in public.
