Drew Peterson, Chicago ex-cop charged in the death of one of his ex-wives, leaves jail for hearing

(CBS/WBBM) CHICAGO - Drew Peterson, a suburban Chicago police officer charged in the death of one of his ex-wives, left jail for the first time in almost two years for a court hearing in his long delayed murder trial.

At Friday's hearing, Peterson's case was assigned to Will County Associate Judge Edward Burmila, reports CBS Chicago.

"I talked to Drew yesterday, he's glad the process is starting again," his attorney, Joel Brodsky, reportedly said. "The waiting and sitting on his hands is over with."

Brodsky said he expects to start the trial in the next 60 to 90 days, according to CBS Chicago.

The station also reports that State Attorney Jim Glasgow says he is ready to proceed after a successful appeals process surrounding hearsay evidence in the case.

"We are anxious to get this case into a courtroom," he said.

The 57-year-old former Bolingbrook police sergeant is charged with first-degree murder in the 2004 drowning death of Kathleen Savio, his third wife, and is a suspect in the 2007 disappearance of his fourth wife, Stacy Peterson. Drew Peterson has denied involvement in either death. His case had been stuck in an appeals court fight for nearly two years until now.
