The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office received the word about Russell King Jr. just before 1 a.m. Tuesday, according to office administrator Hugh Shannon.
"The cause and manner of death of this case are under on-going investigation and will be released upon completion," Shannon said in a statement.
King was one of five students injured when a suspect identified by a family lawyer as TJ Lane opened fire at around 7:40 a.m. at the Chardon High School cafeteria Monday morning. Student Daniel Parmertor died hours after the shooting.
A student who saw the attack up close said it appeared that the gunman targeted a group of students sitting together and that the one of those who was killed was gunned down while trying to duck under a cafeteria table.
17-year-old Lane was arrested Monday and is expected to be in court Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
After the deadly shooting, three students were transported to MetroHealth Medical Center. Daniel Parmertor, 16, died from injuries shortly after being flown to the hospital. King died Monday evening. The third shooting victim at MetroHealth is listed in critical condition.
The remaining two victims, a 17-year-old boy and an 18-year-old girl, were taken to Hillcrest Hospital. The boy was last listed in serious condition and the girl was reported to be in stable condition.
The shooter's family is mourning "this terrible loss for their community," attorney Robert Farnacci said in a statement. FBI officials would not comment on a motive for the shooting.
An education official said the suspected shooter is a Lake Academy student, not a student at Chardon High.
The superintendent immediately canceled all classes for the entire Chardon School District upon hearing of the shooting. Classes have also been canceled for Tuesday, Feb 28th, although grief counselors will be available today even though there is no school.
