(CBS/AP) CHESAPEAKE, Va. - Four teenagers face assault and gang-related charges stemming from an attack on former NFL player Ed Beard.
The teens already were facing assault charges stemming from the Oct. 23 attack on Beard in Chesapeake.
The Virginian-Pilot reports a Chesapeake Circuit Court grand jury Wednesday added charges of recruiting for a gang and participating in a crime with a gang in a school zone.
The 71-year-old Beard was riding his bicycle in his neighborhood when he came upon several youths fighting on a school baseball field. Police say when Beard tried to stop the fight, he was surrounded and some of the youths started hitting him.
Beard, who played defense for the San Francisco 49ers from 1965 to 1972, suffered a concussion, a black eye, and cuts and bruises in the attack.
