Joran van der Sloot sentenced to 28 years behind bars for the murder of Stephany Flores

(CBS/AP) LIMA, Peru - A Peruvian court has sentenced Joran van der Sloot to 28 years in prison for murder of a young woman he met at a Lima casino.

Friday's decision comes two days after the young Dutchman pleaded guilty to killing Stephany Flores. The court also ordered him to pay $75,000 in reparations to the family of the 21-year-old victim.

Under Peru's penal system, Van der Sloot could become eligible for parole after serving half of the sentence with good behavior, including work and study.

Prosecutors asked for a 30-year sentence for first-degree murder and theft in the killing of Flores, who died five years to the day after U.S. teen Natalee Holloway, who was last seen with van der Sloot, disappeared on the island of Aruba.

Van der Sloot's attorney argued that his client should receive a lighter sentence because he was suffering from post-traumatic stress relating to the anniversary of Holloway's disappearance at the time of Flores' murder.

On Wednesday, Van der Sloot pleaded "anticipated conclusion of the process," admitting he strangled Flores in a Lima hotel room.

On Thursday, an Alabama judge officially declared Holloway - who went missing in May 2005 - dead. The 24-year-old Dutchman remains the prime suspect in the case and Holloway's parents want him extradited to the United States to be tried charges he tried to extort her family.

According to van der Sloot, he killed Flores in a fit of rage after she discovered information on his laptop about his involvement in the Holloway case.

We just watched the documentry of joran van der sloot, and my husband quote on quote said" i cant belive that someone would have that kind of gull and would be that sick in the head. That joran van der sloot is not a human being and he hopes that joran van der sloot never sleeps a wink and lives the rest of his life awake.; Reply to this comment


by aslan-again January 14, 2012 11:53 AM EST: I work in Corrections in NY and if the Peruvian prison is anything like NY, his life will be WAY TOO comfortable. Van Der Sloot confessed to killing one woman ( Enrique Flores ) and is more than likely the murderer of Mrs. Holloway. The victims were pretty young women that died way to soon. This piece of walking dung felt he was impervious to the criminal justice system, due to the fact his father was part of THAT system. These women meant nothing more to him than toys to play with and then dispose of. I hope and pray that the family's of these women find peace and that true justice may be served. I feel the Flores family and the Holloway family should be the ones garnishing out the justice of their choice.; Reply to this comment

In my single days, it was nice going abroad meeting ladies who weren't afraid to drive in the same car or talk in a hotel room. You could actually start a relationship in something other than brooding mistrust. In America, the rare maniac apparently drove women to the conclusion that it's proper to treat all men as a foul enemy, at least until it can be proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that the man is actually suitable as a target to be taken advantage of. I refused to put up with the disgraceful antics of American women, and it would be too bad if the ladies from other countries decided to act the same way.

by rockmann8 January 13, 2012 7:44 PM EST: Van der Sloot has no regret nor remorse for killing one young woman and probably being involved in killing another one. Hopefully he will find the same lack of remorse and respect for his life in the Peruvian prison. If he lasts 28 years that is not enough punishment, why should he get ANY chance to be released when he arrogantly and without cause took a young woman's life? He should be put at hard labor every day and fed nothing but bread and water, and not be allowed any access to any electronic communications device and never see a free moment of the light of day. He deserves to be executed, he does not deserve to live out his life in any way except in abject misery. What kind of message does that send to other potential abusers and murderers of innocent women, that they can get life if they get caught, and not die young like their victims? That is not fair. He should get back just what he did to

He killed her because she found out he was a scumbag? Like she wasn't going to find out he was a scumbag?
