Report: Missing Texas 14-year-old mistakenly deported to Colombia

(CBS) DALLAS - A 14-year-old Texas girl who has been missing since 2010 was mistakenly deported to Colombia by immigration agents and is now sitting in a detention facility waiting to come home.

According to CBS affiliate KHOU Jakadrien Turner ran away from home in the fall of 2010 following her parents divorce and the death of her grandfather. She ended up in Houston, where she was arrested for theft. The girl gave police a fake name, which apparently belonged to a 22-year-old illegal immigrant from Colombia, who had warrants for her arrest.

KHOU reports that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) took the girl's fingerprints, but didn't confirm her identity before deporting her.

Jakadrien reportedly speaks no Spanish.

"How do you deport a teenager and send her to Colombia without a passport, without anything?" asks the girl's grandmother, Lorene Turner, who was able to track the girl down through Facebook.

"She talked about how they had her working in this big house cleaning all day, and how tired she was," Turner said.

A month ago, U.S. authorities asked police to pick up the girl at the embassy in Colombia, but the country reportedly won't release her and she is still being held in a detention facility.

In a statement Tuesday, ICE said they were looking into the matter:

"ICE takes these allegations very seriously," said ICE Director of Public Affairs Brian Hale. "At the direction of [the Department of Homeland Security], ICE is fully and immediately investigating this matter in order to expeditiously determine the facts of this case."

She has been missing since 2010 - here is a better question - how is the g-ma found her when she was in Columbia, but not when she was in TX? Of course the country is not going to just release her. Columbia and the US both thought she was a fugitive because she was stupid enough to give police a false name. They want to make sure **** checks out first. Quit downing the govt. its stupid, and you are only showing your own ignorance. Dont like it - DO SOMETHING about it.; Reply to this comment


by nutmegged January 5, 2012 6:07 PM EST: She may not be innocent but she is 14. There is a reason why she ran away from home. She may have lied because she knew she would be sent back home. Obviously she had to steal because she had no money to support herself and couldn't get a legit job. She is lucky not to be hooked on drugs and forced to be a prostitute.

Look at the big picture here, the US sent a 14 year old American to Columbia who "had the same name" as a 22 year old. She does not speak Spanish or look 22. The US did not confirm identity of her. She is too young to be negligent. This is wrong in so many ways.; Reply to this comment

The wanted person had a warrant which would indicate she had a record and finger prints on file. It appears to me that someone is playing the old CYA game here. "not our fault she just happened to use the name of a wanted illegal". How would she get the name in the first place people. I highly doubt that she 'stole' the identity of a wanted illegal as someone has alleged on here. I also find that the lack of empathy for this CHILD is very scary and sad. She made a mistake, she had issues at home and ran away (usually a cry for help) and stole to care for herself, lets just call her a criminal and say she deserved what she got for making childhood mistakes. Sad, really. I am also seeing that in the first article, it states she refused to tell them who she was, so now that the ICE have their necks on a chopping block, it morphs into "she gave the name of a wanted illegal". Sure and by the way, I have a UFO for sale if anyone is interested. Please tell me that others have noticed the morphing of the story and the excuses being made as to WHY they deported this child. I also want you all to think about two other issues here, one being it stated this child may now be pregnant and two, the refusal to allow her to be brought back to the USA where she belongs. How did she get deported, end up pregnant (possibly) and what do they have to hide over there that would result in refusal to allow this child brought back to the states. Someone needs to be held accountable for this, all of it, and anything that may have happened to her as a result of the mistakes of ICE, and I don't mean the child or her parents. This doesn't even make sense!
Whatever name she gave its not like that was the ONLY person in the world with that name! Most of us, if we type our own name into google would find there are MANY people with the same name!

I expect ICE uses databases and OTHER ways to track illegals besides "Google". How many illegals have their names on Google anyway??? If they were all out there easy to find, a roundup would be pretty easy, wouldn't it?

Poor ICE - damned if they do, damned if they don't. People complain they don't do enough, now they're complaining they went too far.

And these were TEXAS ICE officials. Perhaps a bit zealous in their efforts to rack up those deportation brownie points?

The girl was a runaway and a criminal and a liar. She got what she deserved. Maybe next time she'll not runaway, not commit a crime and be truthful.
