Cops: Dad beat 5-year-old daughter for not understanding the letter 'D'

(CBS/WOIO/AP) AKRON, Ohio - Police in Ohio say an Akron man beat his 5-year-old daughter because she was having trouble with her alphabet homework.

Police say the kindergartner was struggling to recognize the letter 'D' on Tuesday when 39-year-old Christopher D. Curry became angry, picked the girl up by the neck and struck her in the head repeatedly.

According to CBS station WOIO, when officers arrived the at the scene, they found the child with tears pouring down her face. She had multiple knots on her head, a large lump around her left temple, a swollen left eye, and a cut lip. She was immediately sent to Akron Children's Hospital for further evaluation.

Curry was charged with felonious assault, child endangering and domestic violence. He was being held in the Summit County jail with bond set at $100,000.

by klukaszek November 12, 2011 1:35 AM EST: The tears are dripping off my face reading what this poor baby must have went thru trying to give this animal the answers that he wanted. We have to start prioritizing who and which offenders belong behind bars. Anyone who hurts a child needs to be at the top of the list. I for the life of me don't understand why we are not creating tougher laws for these types of animals.; Reply to this comment


by evia912710 November 11, 2011 4:42 PM EST: My God! That poor girl. He should never be allowed around her again. I'm thinking this probably isn't the only incident. I'm wondering where is her mom and who alerted the police? Whoever it was did the right thing and probably saved this little girl from future abuse or even an early death. I hope there are no other children involved. Praying the girl is ok and not returned to this monster.; Reply to this comment
