NEW YORK (CBS/AP) A little late?

Twenty-nine years after Jaycee Lee Dugard's birth and 18 years after her abduction from a South Lake Tahoe bus stop, a man claiming to be her father is suddenly feeling a longing for a family reunion.

In a news conference on Sept. 23, Gloria Allred, the attorney for Ken Slayton, 63, said that he and Terry Probyn, Dugard's mother, dated for about a month in 1979 when Probyn became pregnant. Allred said that Probyn never told Slayton about the baby.

Now Slayton wants a private paternity test and a reunion with the girl who was allegedly imprisoned in the Antioch, Calif., backyard of Phillip and Nancy Garrido for nearly two decades and forced to bear two children.

Slayton is now married with children and wrote in a statement that his wife and children "long to be the loving, supportive and normal family to her and her children that she has not had for 18 years."

"He wants nothing from her," Allred said at the news conference. "What they really want to do is love her."

A spokeswoman for the Dugard family said they have not been contacted by Slayton since Dugard was found.

"This all comes as a big surprise," family spokeswoman Erika Schulte told the Los Angeles Times.

(He goes as far as even threatening legal action if a paternity test is refused.)

Where did he say that? I didn't see that in the article. The man must know that would be a lost cause since Jaycee is an adult and can legally make her own decisons. The there's the fact that it's unlikely a judge would futher tramatize an already severely tramatized woman by forcing her to take a paternity test.

Ken Slayton is a good man,a good father and a good person. I know him personally and it kills me to read what some people are saying about him. If Ken had known that he was Jaycee's father he would have been there for her.Period! You people act like you dont know that the media does'nt blow things out of perportion, and try to make people sound stupid. Ken is alittle rough arlund the edges, but he's a good guy. Try to put yourself in his shoes. He might have bad timing. But he has a good heart. If Jaycee is his daughter I have know doubt that Ken will do whatever he can to help support her and her daughters in their time of need. So again who are you to judge a man you dont know. Who are you to judge anyone.. YOUR NOT GOD. Only he can judge.

God bless you Jaycee and your daughters. I pray that you find an inner peace that will help heal your soul. Please know that you are loved and thought of and prayed for often..

Ok...why I don't buy this is because early on, it was said that after their one month relationship (terry & ken) Terry mentioned that she did talk to him one more time over the phone and that is when she told him she was pregnant with his baby. He was very irresponsible. He needs to back off. I totaly agree that he should, sometime in the future (not the near future anyway) meet Jaycee, if she choses to. But what he is doing now is very wrong. I mean Jaycee has been through so much. Meeting another stranger, learning that he is her father, that might make things more difficult, and it might delay her healing. Just let her heal with the family she knows. Is that too much to ask?
whoarewetojudgeanyone could you please explain to me how come him and his 2 daughters went on the inside edition 2 weeks after Jaycee was found? What for? Seriously? It's crystal clear that they are looking for some kind of "fame".

Apparently Slayton lied at this time because he did know about the pregnancy and was not interested and thought she had aborted the child (probably was not civil conversation at all). He learned from a mutual friend a little later that she had a child. Again he was not interested and took no steps to get to know this child.

Now she is grown has children of her own and he wants to invade her body for a paternity test to proof he is the father. Why? She said no he should just go. This has nothing to do with judging, it has everything to do with Jaycee's rights to see who she wants. She already spent 18 years with people who forced themselves on her, made demands of her and did not care for her rights or opinion. Jaycee is not incompetent or mentally slow. She has her own mind and opinions. If Ken is such a good guy, then tell him to lay off. Give Jaycee time to get settled. If she then wants to think about a relationship with him and his family she knows how to contact him. HE SHOULD NOT FORCE HIMSELF ON HER. NO ONE SHOULD EVER FORCE THEMSELVES ON SOMEONE.

Congratulation Ken Slayton, you just made an even more disgusting name for youself.
This guy and his family make me sick to my stomach. They've got some guts. They even went on the Inside Edition, yes, him and his daughters, who HAVE NOTHING to do with Jaycee. I was so pissed when I saw, that I didn't even watch it. I refuse to give them any time (except this) of my day. Sick, sick, sick, what you are doing.

It is so obvious that you Ken, and your daughters want to make money off of Jaycee. Please listen to all the normal people, and let it go, leave Jaycee alone. IF she will want to get to know you, she will make a move. But you have no right to demand that.

How sick him and his family must be that they obviously know about Jaycee's ordeal, something that shocked me so much that in the begining I couldn't sleep at night thinking of what that poor girl went thorough, and they go and put their hands on every lame (Gloria) opportunity to make money off of her. I hope that you guys either wake up, or never get to see Jaycee. EVER!!!

And Jaycee deserves every right in the world to write books, and make millions. Because her and her daughters deserve the best possible life this world can give them, and that's HUGE. Of course the love Jaycee's mother and family can offer her is much more than that, but the millions would be the topping.

Hmmm,

Let's try and be reasonable about this. Perhaps Ken Slayton has tried to find Jaycee and her mother, and perhaps he his Jaycee's dad. It could be.

He is apparently also a Vietnam veteran (at least I think I read that somewhere).

I think that under the circumstances, if he went and conducted an anonymous search, and dealt with the whole issue anonymously, seeking anonymous contacts, that could be justified. But at this moment, such an anonymous search would be out of place completely. It would be most unsettling to Jaycee and her family.

If Ken is really Jaycee's (sudden) loving dad, what would he do? Wouldn't he help in protecting Jaycee's privacy? I commend Carl Probyn for the way he has handled the affair and helps protecting that privacy. Unfortunately, Ken Slayton does not measure up to that standard. Instead, within weeks of Jaycee being rediscovered, he goes all the way publicizing his own involvement (for which there is as yet no proof, apparently - otherwise, why demand a paternity test?) He goes as far as even threatening legal action if a paternity test is refused.

Is that a sign of a loving dad, Ken Slayton? Does that show you care for Jaycee? Jaycee wouldn't know you from the first stranger she met on that fateful day in June 1991.

If you are so concerned about Jaycee, you should stay out of her life for quite a while yet. You managed to do that for 29 years, didn't you? So why can't you stay out of her life for just a little longer, to allow her to resettle. It would benefit her, and it doesn't change your life one iota.

So why go public right at this moment, Ken?

Your action is ugly.

It is ugly because of the timing.
It is even more ugly because you use legal treats.

Stop thinking of yourself as the most important person in Jaycee's life, please. Carl Probyn has much more right to that position than you.

Gerrit

Jaycee is now 29 years old? And the father wants to be in her life all of a sudden? You dont wake up one day and say I want to be in someone's life after you have left them and decided then he didnt want to be in their life. I agree with everyone that had said leave Jaycee alone and that she has a lot going on right now. Her father is way too late and in my opinion he just wanted public attention a little bit of fame and cash out on interviews. HE'S JUST GOING TO USE JAYCEE!!!

He's way to late. He should have been there in the hospital when she was born. He should have been helping to take of her before she was abducted. He's nothing but a dead beat dad and now he wants to show his *ss.

Sounds like the guy is looking for some quick attention and of course some easy cash. No offense to Jaycee, but I'm sure there is a book and movie deal in the works, and she stands to make millions maybe by doing the talk show rounds when she's up to it. Time for him to move on and not bother the poor girl.
