Phillip Garrido appeared in an El Dorado, Calif. court on Sept. 14, 2009 for a bail hearing.

PLACERVILLE, Calif. (CBS/AP) Bail was set at $30 million today for the man who allegedly kidnapped Jaycee Lee Dugard and held her captive for nearly twenty years.

Phillip Garrido has pleaded not guilty to charges associated with the 1991 abduction of 11-year-old Dugard and has been held without bail in an El Dorado County jail.

Garrido and his wife Nancy face a total of 29 charges including kidnapping, rape and false imprisonment of Dugard, who they allegedly held in a series of tents and sheds in their backyard for 18 years. Authorities say Phillip Garrido fathered two daughters with Dugard.

El Dorado County Superior Court Judge Douglas Phimister set the high bail amount, citing the serious nature of the charges, injuries to the victim and the fact that Garrido was on parole at the time of the alleged abduction.

Nancy Garrido continues to be held without bail, something her attorney did not object to during the Monday morning hearing.

Phillip Garrido appeared in court with a bandage on his nose and a newly grown beard. He and his wife both appeared solemn at the 10-minute hearing, during which Phillip Garrido's attorney requested a psychiatric evaluation for her client and Nancy Garrido's attorney also reserved the right to request one.

Both are due back in court for an Oct. 29 hearing.

Why all the hate? This is a man of god. You people are too judgmental, he was only doing what jesus' voice in his head told him to do. Bone fragments? Just burnt offerings which smell sweet to the lord. Hypocrites. (i'm being facetious in case you can't tell)

well I understand, the man has a few more children to rape before being incarcerated the rest of his life, so the judge is just using common sense. The more rapists and murderers we have on the streets, the more job security for lawyers and judges.

I have got to agree ..Bail? The guy is a dangerous pedophile. He now has nothing to lose if he would happen to make bail. Judges are just stupider versions of the lawyers they used to be.

Yes. Why is this monster even allowed bail? He was on lifetime parole--since when does a person who violates parole not go back to prison? What in the world is wrong with California? After this monster and his co-monster kidnaps more than one person, rapes, possibly murders more than one person. The judge is very wrong. Where in the world did he study law?!

Why grant bail at all? Grant them both a one way ticket to the general population.

Why grant bail at all? I can understand it in some cases - if there's any doubt about who did it - but in this case, there simply is no doubt.

Both of these creeps will spend the rest of their lives in isolation in the prison system.
