Casey Anthony sentenced to four years, could be out in weeks

UPDATE: Casey Anthony to be released from jail on Wednesday

(CBS/WKMG/AP) ORLANDO, Fla. - Casey Anthony was sentenced Thursday by Judge Belvin Perry to four years in prison for lying to police, but with credit for time served and good behavior she is likely to be released in late July or early August.

She received one year in jail, to be served consecutively, on each of four counts of providing false information to law enforcement as well as a fine of $1,000 for each count, plus court costs.

"We're gonna figure out her credit for time served. It's going to take us about an hour to sort it out because the previous sentences she has been given," Perry said. "But with the good time and gain time, depending on preliminary figures, sometime early August. Maybe late July. But I can't say that until I first determine time served. And then the jail has to apply, according to their figures, their good time and gain time that she has gained in this," Perry said regarding Anthony's release, reports CBS affiliate WKMG.

Casey Anthony has been in jail since October 2008.

Perry said the defense has 30 days to file an appeal. A hearing has been set for the end of July.

As the sentence was announced, Orlando real estate broker Flora Reece stood outside the courthouse with a sign that read "Arrest the Jury."

After the sentencing, protesters chanted Caylee's name outside the courthouse as well as "Justice for Caylee," reports the station.

"At least she won't get to pop the champagne cork tonight," Reece said of the judge's decision to keep Anthony in jail.

The crowd of a few dozen emotionally charged protesters stood apart from the handful of Casey Anthony supporters, which included one man displaying a sign asking Anthony to marry him, reports WKMG.

On Tuesday, Anthony was acquitted on first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse and aggravated manslaughter charges in the death of her daughter, Caylee.

A Disgusting Sight

I don't really know what happened to Casey Anthony's daughter Caylee - that's a secret only Casey and her father can answer. But lie upon lie, damaging photos and stories that don't match up give me a pretty strong suspicion that at the very least Casey had some hand in her death.

Now that the jury - which was mostly male - has spoken, she is considered "not guilty" in the eyes of the law, and after serving her sentence for lying to investigators she'll be a free woman.

Sure, this is a disappointment, and probably an injustice against the deceased child, but perhaps the most offensive thing from my perspective was the triumphant smirk painted on Anthony's face after acquittal on murder charges. It was a slip-up in the otherwise penitent performance she's put on, and betrays, at the very least, a lack of sincerity.

She let the mask slide during sentencing as well.

This woman is a shameless liar, a manipulator and a sociopath at the very least. She is sadly common in the ranks of young American women of today, who still, if the jury's verdict is any indication, get the benefit of the doubt even in highly suspicious circumstances.

This behavior will not change until Western women are held to the same standards as men, and innocents will continue to pay the price for their misdeeds.

by starthinker July 7, 2011 2:03 PM EDT: One has to wonder if the degree of outrage expressed at the acquittal of Casey Anthony has more to say about our collective disillusionment about our legal justice system, the disenfranchisement so many of us experience as the world more than ever reacts and behaves in a way that so often goes against our moral notions. But maybe that's the point, that morality is a dying art or perhaps it just never existed- it all may come down to who you end up siding with, how big your gun is and how cleverly you disguised your alibi.

1) It is better to let 100 guilty people go free than hold 1 innocent person guilty. The Confession by John Grisham is a great read on the issue of the death penalty and circumstantial evidence.
2) TV shows such as CSI and the like cause potential jurors to expect clear and specific scientific evidence confirming the accused actually committed the crime.
3) The level of dysfunction in the Anthony home may have created the reasonable doubt as to why Casey went so long without reporting her daughter missing.
4) Did the prosecution miss the mark in not charging the lesser offense of manslaughter as opposed to charging aggravated manslaughter? The one juror who has come forward thus far to my knowledge has stated she did not say she believed Casey Anthony was innocent. She believed Casey was not guilty of the crimes she was charged with beyond a reasonable doubt.
5) It is easy to be on the outside looking in. Take a good look at the strangers you pass as you go thru your day and think long and hard as to whether you could make a decision that would end that person's life when there was no direct proof that they did what they are accused of doing.
6) Justice is served when we are all afforded and fair and impartial legal process. Casey and her daughter both received justice.
7) For all the individuals making threats of harm to Casey, her family, the jurors or anyone else involved in this, please realize you are threatening to do the very same thing for which you now despise Casey for allegedly having done.; Reply to this comment

Like many others, I was also surprised by this verdict. However, after hearing from some of the jurists, I think I now understand. This may signal the end of states bring capital murder charges against people using only circumstantial evidence. Indeed, too many innocent people have already gone to their deaths based on about the same amount of evidence as presented during this trial. Having said that, it seems pretty clear that this women is guilty of this crime. But-- the law is the law--- and I think the jury was right in their decision.

It may be clear that she had something to do with Caylee's death, but she did not intentionally kill the child - there is zero evidence for pre-meditation.

Being a good mother is keeping your child safe from harm, supporting that child and giving that child a home. That job fell on Cindy and George, not this worthless person. Everyone here thinks she deserves to rot in hell, even though she was found not guilty of the murder. Not only was she not convicted of the murder, but the MANSLAUGHTER charges were dropped. Your only source of information is what the news tells you - and the news also told you Strauss-Khan was guilty too. Is she a bad person, probably. Did she kill her daughter, probably not, or she would have been convicted on a lesser charge, even if they couldn't prove the murder. by bree1345 July 7, 2011 12:18 PM EDT: She wants a complete make-over, more children. Wouldn't be nice if her make-over went bad and couldn't be fixed, and she should be sterilized (accidentally of-course) it happens.
So what is going to be done in pursuing Caylee's death. Or is it a dead (excuse the punt) subject?? Civil suit by the parents?; Reply to this comment
