Nancy and Philip Garrido sentenced for Jaycee Lee Dugard kidnapping

Philip and Nancy Garrido to be sentenced today for Jaycee Lee Dugard kidnapping

(CBS/KTVN/AP) PLACERVILLE, Calif. - Nancy and Philip Garrido were sentenced Thursday for the 1991 kidnapping of Jaycee Lee Dugard.

Phillip Garrido received a sentence of 431 years to life and his wife Nancy was sentenced to 36 years to life for holding Dugard captive for 18 years and repeatedly raping her.

Before the sentences were handed down, Dugard's mother read a statement on her behalf. It was Dugard's first public statement about her ordeal and she said her life was stolen by her abductor.

"I chose not to be here today because I refuse to waste another second of my life in your presence," Dugard wrote in a portion of the statement directed to Phillip Garrido. "Everything you ever did to me was wrong and I hope one day you will see that."

"I hated every second of every day for 18 years," she wrote. "You stole my life and that of my family."

The two defendants pleaded guilty in April to kidnapping and rape under a deal that called for the sentences the pair received today.

The deal was designed, in part, to spare Dugard and her children from having to testify at a trial.

Dugard was was snatched from a South Lake Tahoe, Calif. street in 1991. While being held by the Garridos, she gave birth to two children fathered by Philip Garrido.

According to CBS affiliate KTVN, reports say a judge will also hear arguments from the media seeking to unseal grand jury transcripts and other documents in the case, something the district attorney and Nancy's lawyer both oppose.

She could have gotten her out there any time during the month long prison sentence and returned her to her family!!!! by Trouble1986 May 6, 2012 4:47 PM EDT: What makes me totally sick about this whole thing is that one the parol officers did a crappy job on watching him, and two he took the first girl from the same state and city as Jaycee. Why the dumb ***** didnt connect the two was beyond me?! And the fact that he was in prison for a month during Jaycee's capitivity for parol voilion for drugs. He admitted the first time that the drugs made him kidnap and rape the first victim, again why did they not connect the dots. This poor girl was in the same state for 18 years. Shame on the state of California for not finding her sooner!!!!!!! It should all be worth a lot more the 20 million dollars!!!!!!!!; Reply to this comment

If they are guilty beyound doubt which is the case here, then put them out of our lives and they get what they deserve. Death. There should not have been any plea bargin, why? Why plea bargin a rapist and kidnapper? It may be an opinion which does not please everyone but it would be the best thing that happens to this country. forgive those that know not what they do

the hardest thing, but most truest is that jaycee agreed for this to happen to her before she came to earth..she needed it to learn the lessons her soul wanted..while we may wish for the most severe punishment for nancy and philip..surely forgiveness is the only way for someone to truly recognise what they have done, not just to the victim but to themselves.

If she was my daughter I would have urged her to not allow a plea deal and go to trial and see both of these scum locked up for the rest of their lives. While Philip may have instigated this, Nancy broke sisterhood by allowing it to go on for 18 years, and the truth is she deserves an even worse punishment than Philip.; Reply to this comment

Why do these USA citizens of the jury believe that these in-humans should live on ??? Are the people of the jury even mentally fit to sit in judgement? They deserve death by the worst methods, many times over. Jaycee & her children will never stop suffering, why should the Dugards???
