University of San Diego student shot while driving to school
Investigation into freeway shooting on SR-163
(Credit: CBS/KFMB)(CBS/KFMB/AP) SAN DIEGO - A 21-year-old University of San Diego student is recovering after she was shot on a state freeway while driving to school.
According to CBS affiliate KFMB, the student, who police have not identified, was driving in the fast lane on state Route 163 Tuesday when she felt pain in her side.
The woman called her mother who dialed 911. She continued driving to the campus and met with paramedics who discovered a gunshot wound to her rib cage.
She underwent surgery and is expected to survive.
Police found a bullet hole in the passenger side door of her Toyota Matrix and 10 bullet casings on the freeway believed to be linked to the shooting.
A description of the suspect vehicle was unavailable, and it was unclear if the woman ever saw the shooter or the vehicle, the station reports.
