The bomb packed into the back of Shahzad's SUV fizzled, injuring no one at the crossroads of New York City teeming with restaurants, Broadway theaters, and tourists.
However, the Pakistan-born, U.S. citizen was not so lucky when a federal judge handed down his mandatory life prison term Tuesday.
Shahzad, who referred to himself as a Muslim soldier, pleaded guilty in June to 10 terrorism and weapons counts for the attempted May 1 bombing. He told the judge a defeat of the United States is imminent.
Two days after his failed plan to kill Americans, FBI agents and New York Police Dept. detectives apprehended Shahzad trying to board a flight to Dubai.
Prior to the botched attack, Shahzad, a budget analyst living in Connecticut, had returned from a five-month trip to Pakistan.
