Ines Sainz (PICTURES): New York Jets Reporter Talks About Locker Room Incident

NEW YORK (CBS/AP) Ines Sainz says she has accepted New York Jets owner Woody Johnson's personal apology for the team's inappropriate behavior during a practice on Saturday.

On CBS News' "The Early Show," the sportscaster for Mexico's TV Azteca put the incident in her own words, saying that the minute she walked into the locker room, everyone started talking about her and making jokes.

She said, "I decided not to pay attention. I was focusing on my interview so I go direct to the locker of room of Mr. Sanchez and I wait for him. But I believe that the rest of the media start to hear the different kind of things that I didn't hear. And sometime in a minute, a colleague [said], 'Come with me, and I'm so sorry...It's terrible. I feel sorry for you.' So I tried to say, 'Don't worry, I can handle the situation.' And that's it. And I don't even try to pay attention."

She added, "I was focused on my job, and try to not pretend not to be feeling bad in this situation."

Sainz, a veteran reporter for TV Azteca who has been covering sports for nine years, says she trusts the NFL and believes they will take the appropriate action.

"I really believe in what NFL decide[s]," she told the morning show. "I really believe that they find that they need to punish someone, they are going to do it. And if they find if it's not necessary, I really trust in what they say."

Though she doesn't plan to pursue any further action in case, that doesn't mean that the team is out of legal trouble.

Wendy Murphy, a victims' rights advocate and former prosecuting attorney, told The Early Show that "if people around her saw it as sexual harassment, it could be actionable even if she's not quite clear if she wants to file a lawsuit yet."

If a woman is in a Men's locker room and she a) sees naked men b) hears them talking rudely c) receives or hears comments of a sexual or offensive nature --- then she might want to remind herself that she is in a Men's locker room.

It sounds like Ms. Sainz was actually ignoring the comments (being professional - and good for her!) but a bunch of other busybodies got offended on her behalf. Ridiculous... Is this how pathetic we have become as a society, that men have to be polite and courteous even in the locker room. Really? How exhausting...

Please, someone find me a place where I am free to cuss, fart, be naked, scratch myself in random places and talk to the other guys about my feelings....which are likely to be about "how lovely that fine and intelligent woman reporter looks today" -- of course that last bit might be phrased a little differently...

Seriously though. A MEN'S Locker Room...

Question(s):
When was the last time a male reporter was in a WOMEN's locker room?

Would just being there be considered sexual harassment?

Should we not alert the Victim's Rights people that some of the men might have felt victimized by the presence of a woman in their locker room?

Perhaps they should be encouraged to speak out and shake off years of oppression by women reporters invading their privacy and emotionally scarring them.

What can be done to help those poor young men who might have been traumatized by Ms. Sainz' presence in their locker room.

See how ridiculous it all sounds....but flip it around male-female and all of a sudden no one is laughing...funny, huh?

That's my phrase. But you were so right deciding it: no, feminism isn't really funny at all...and it's more real than a lot of people actually like to think. But you made 'em think it anyway. She knew exactly what she was doing and once again the media took the bait and blew the story out of proportion. There is no need for it,all reporters can do interviews outside of the locker rooms.Maybe if she gained 200 lbs and grew a mushdash the comments would not have offended her?; Reply to this comment


by Resin-Smoker September 15, 2010 2:37 PM EDT: This is a MALE locker room... News reporter or not, she has no place there unless she were to suddenly drop a pair. (I seam to recall her saying that in Mexico such reports from locker rooms arent allowed... Gee i wonder why)

Whats really the issue here is the percieved notion that she has the right to be there. If this were a male reporter looking to interview female athletes in their locker room, I'm sure he'd be shown the door.

As for what she was wearing... It's ok but not what I'd expect serrious news agent to be wearing, unless her intent was to be provocative and force a scene.; Reply to this comment

I am a female and love football. This women is very pretty and totality dresses to her sex appeal. She is old enough and has the life experience to know the reaction and attention this brings. Nothing wrong with being attractive and sexy but theres a time and place. That would not be in a NFL locker room with hafe dressed men. Why is she aloud in there? Double standard mabe.As a women you can not want that reaction and then cry foul when they whisle at you or throw a ball your way in practice.Her jeans looked like they were painted on, she looked very sexy.Keep the female reporters out of the locker room.I do not think the jetts should get in trouble or say sorry.

by Koatz September 14, 2010 3:44 PM EDT: This is what feminists have done to our society. A woman goes into an all male locker room, overhears some "bad" jokes, and is transformed into a poor, downtrodden victim-celebrity.
Anyone that has played on a sports team knows that those kind of jokes are told even when females are not present. It's not a harassment thing at all, and is part of the locker room environment. If females want to interview male athletes while they are undressed in the locker room - a semi-private environment, imo - they should be prepared to accept what normally occurs in those environments.
Imagine a male reporter going into a female locker room while the women are in various states of dress - that would be an accomplishment in itself - then complaining because he heard some crude jokes about men. Would it be right for the man to get upset and demand an apology - and compensation - for experiencing something to which he subjected himself?

Of course not, and neither should women reporters be treated differently when they experience less than admirable behavior after entering a male locker room.; Reply to this comment
