INDIANAPOLIS (CBS/AP) A loaded, unguarded gun was behind a tragedy in Indianapolis: Police say a 4-year-old boy fired the shot that killed his 3-year-old playmate.

Lt. Jeff Duhamell says the boy picked up a loaded .45-caliber handgun that had been left on a kitchen table in Fiona C. Lee's house Thursday, and pointed it at the girl's head before firing.

The victim was Lee's own daughter, Aunesti Lee Allen, who died at Riley Hospital for Children.

Duhamell said Friday that the boy who shot the gun is the son of Lee's boyfriend.

Police say they found cocaine and marijuana in Lee's home and arrested the 26-year-old woman on child neglect and drug charges.

She was being held Friday in the Marion County Jail.

Duhamell said Lee's two other children witnessed the shooting. They are being cared for by a relative.

Drugs or not, ghetto or not doesn't matter.

Remember the story of the 8 year old boy at the gun show firing a machine gun and "accidently" killing himself?

That's what happens when everyone can own a gun. That's what happens when there are no laws saying you have to lock them up.

And please don't tell me that not everyone can own a gun, because they can. There are millions of unstable people walking around out there and they get the guns LEGALLY. There isn't anything stamped on their forehead saying they are unstable. No noticeable signs.

Half the states don't even have a wait period. No permit required.

Are you serious? You're willing to give the government that much control over us? It's ignorance like this that allows for more and more of our rights to be taken away.

Tragic though this story is, it's not an accurate picture of responsible gun owners. I have three small children and we have weapons in our home. Never once have I had an issue with children getting ahold of a weapon. Not to mention most safetys on handguns are very difficult for a child to trip. Obviously, not only was this gun loaded, it wasn't on safety. The comments on here are outrageous. Guns shouldn't be the issue here, it should be the parenting that contributed to this child's death.

There is an epidemic of stupid parents out there. If all those stupid parents didn't have guns, it wouldn't be an issue!

This is such a tragic story and goes to show, why parenting should not be a right. if you need a liscense to drive then you should need one to be a parent. This mother I hope will suffer as it was her child who died.

How sad that there are parents out there that are so irresponsible! But what can we expect as we live in these "last days" when people have no natural affection(1Timothy 3:1-4). How we look forward to God's promised New World...

After reading this tragic story, I've got to ask one thing, what in the Hell was this woman thinking leaving a loaded handgun right where children can get to it? I mean seriously, where in the hell was this woman's brain? I feel so bad for the parents of the little girl who was shot. I know the little boy didn't mean to shoot her.
I hope the mother who owns the handgun doesn't reprimand her son for this accident but instead blames herself for leaving a loaded handgun where a child could get to it. I hope she gets some sort of lock box and put it inside and then places it where no child can reach it.
I also think that the child should be in counseling and his mother in jail.

Funny, I know hundreds of parents that own guns and it would never occur to any of them to leave a gun--loaded or unloaded---where a kid could get access to it.

Take a closer look at this story and the names. You'll find this is NOT a typical family. Obviously a very poor(ghetto) family, and I understand that drugs or alcohol, with absent parents, were involved. Likely an illegally owned gun as well.

Sorry folks, but these accidents simply almost never occur in healthy and normal families.

Hundreds, huh? Yeah, right.

Bull. There was a shooting not that long ago, where a COP left his gun in his car and his kid got a hold of it and shot his cousin, or something like that.

Anybody know what well-regulated militia the four year old belonged to?

Not all Canadians believe as some who've posted do. Many of us - good, solid, law-abiding citizens - believe in the right to bear arms.

This was a tragic, tragic accident, which occurred because of negligence on the part of the parents.

I didn't notice anywhere in the story where it said the gun was unregistered, was that just an assumption uubrew12? I think boogieluvr said it best, it all has to do with stupidity, you don't leave loaded guns sitting out in front of kids period. Hidden camera tests have been set up where a nonworking gun has been left in a drawer in a room and each time the kids were let in there to play they found it and one would always take it out and play with it and point it at a playmate and say, "bang". Why wouldn't they, that's all they see on TV and video games.

If people are going to own guns they need to be responsible for them. I'm 58 and have a concealed weapons permit and have carried more years than I can remember, and a lot of years before I had the permit. It's saved my life twice having had my gun with me and I thank God I've never had to use it, but had I not had it I'd probably not be here. It's something I believe in but I also don't have issues with registering guns, something not common with most gun owners. I agree that something needs to be done to get guns out of the street gangs hands. There'll always be the mass shootings, you can't stop people from going crazy and there's so many guns left over from the last 100 years that have never been registered, and so many people who are anti-registration. The saddest part is the kids though, and people really need to think about how they store their guns, they just can't put a loaded gun down on a table around a child because kids are too curious.
