Michael Vick's Dog-Fighting Friend Shot at QB's Birthday Bash; Lawyer Says Vick Not Involved

According to witnesses, Quanis Phillips, who was a co-defendant in Vick's federal dogfighting case, became disgruntled and threw cake in the face of the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback once Vick and his brother Marcus Vick noticed he crashed the party early Friday, said The New York Post.
Larry Woodard, an attorney from Vick's dog-fighting case, said the quarterback was not at Guadalajara nightclub when the shooting took place outside after 2 a.m. Phillips was taken to Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital where his injuries were not considered life-threatening, according to Virginia Beach police spokesman Adam Bernstein. He was released from the hospital early Friday afternoon.
It is unclear whether Phillips, who was sentenced to 21 months in prison for his involvement in the dog-fighting operation, was even invited to the birthday bash. Vick's parole agreement indicates that he must not associate with a convicted felon unless authorized by his probation officer. Vick has an 18-month federal prison sentence for his role in the dog-fighting ring.
NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said the league is investigating the shooting. Vick was reinstated by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell after being suspended from the league for two years last July. He had moderate playing time with the Eagles last season as the second string quarterback behind starter Donovan McNabb.
The Eagles released a statement saying the team was still collecting facts about the event and refused to comment further.
The incident occurred during a homecoming of sorts for Vick, the former Virginia Tech Hokie who was in Virginia Beach to celebrate his birthday and host a youth football camp at nearby Hampton University.
