NEW YORK (CBS/AP) A Utah firing squad is waiting for murderer Ronnie Lee Gardner.

Barring the success of any last-minute appeals, his execution will be carried out shortly after 12:01 a.m. Friday.

Gardner was sentenced to death in 1985 for the Salt Lake City courthouse slaying of attorney Michael Burdell during a failed escape attempt.

Gardner chose firing squad as the means of his death.

If executed, Gardner will become the first person to be put to death by firing squad in the United States in 14 years.

by petewestwood June 18, 2010 5:37 PM EDT: If a person is sentenced to the death penalty it should be dealt with quickly. Not the next day, but a reasonable time that is not 25 years. Because then and only then, will ?justice? be served to the lost ones, and healing can begin for the inmates family and friends.

by markenriquez71 June 17, 2010 7:31 PM EDT: those that are against the DEATH PENALTY have the right to their opinion, funny how your opinion is what you feel shouldn't be done to the murderer, your opinion has more passion and energy put into the reasons why your against what shouldn't happen to a murderer, instead of being passionate about what happens to the victims that get murdered by these useless scumbags, PRISON IS NOT PUNISHMENT for murderers, 99 percent of murderers would choose life in prison over the death penalty, thats a fact, so you are actually giving this murderer his only last thing he wants to keep and that is his life, i wouldn't give them s**t, they don't deserve anything, if you have the evil mentality to kill, do you really think that living in an air conditioned prison with 3 meals a day and not having to support yourself in the free society is some horrible situation for a murderer, i've been in jail for a misdemeanor and i know that these losers in there see jail as a way of life, don't fool yourself into thinking that the death penalty is to easy a way out for these murderers because you think that life in prison is more torture than an execution, maybe to you thats true, but you are not a MURDERER,so of course to you life in prison sounds like the ultimate punishment, because you can't fathom the thought of being locked up, a murderer can, its an easy way of life if they go back to prison, they don't have to do anything in prison except hang out with other scum and bs all day, its hard to work and earn a living like all good people do; Reply to this comment

by saggsab June 17, 2010 4:23 PM EDT: I think we should bring back all the old death penalty selections for these prisoners but not give them the choice in how they die - they should die like the people they killed / or close to it - say like burning at the stake, drowned, pressed under rocks, iron maiden, hanging, electric chair, etc... They did not give their victims the choice, and how can it be cruel & unusual if they die in the same manner that they killed others.

The death penalty should be abolished. Violence breeds violence, so don't think that this is going to deter anyone!

2. How about strapping him across the top of an anthill in the desert sun, then pouring honey over him. Let the ants do the job. Might take a day or two, but he will definitely have time to regret his actions.; Reply to this comment
