Toddler Beaten to Death with Basketball Sneaker, Babysitter Did It, Say Cops

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (CBS/WREG) A Memphis man is charged with beating a 2-year-old to death with a basketball sneaker, after the toddler accidentally defecated on herself.

According to an affidavit obtained by CBS affiliate WREG, Calvin Jones told police he was babysitting the 2-year-old girl Friday May 14, when she had an accident.

Jones told police he used "a basketball shoe" and the back of his hand to hit the child several times.

Jones is charged with first degree murder and two counts of aggravated child abuse.

The child's mother, Anisha Alford, is charged with one count of aggravated child abuse.

Police say Alford admitted her daughter had spit up, and complained of being cold and feeling sick, but she took no action. Police records do not indicate whether Alford was aware of the beating.

Authorities say Alford and Jones decided not to seek medical treatment, and then found the child dead Saturday morning.

That fact is the little girl was a human being and race should not be the subject. It should be how does this country in whole comes together to end senseless violence. When you bring race into it-it shows your ignorance. There was a case like this last week with another race but I never read once that whites churches should come together and march for justice. It was a sad case that ended with a low life women allowing her husband to beat her child to death than beat out his teeth, cut up his body and then bury the little boy.; Reply to this comment

Any excuse for lowlives like this to beat the crap out of a defenseless child. How much rage is in a person to do something like this? I am also so sick of hearing about the mother's in cases like this not being aware of the situation. B.S. How can you leave your injured child and just go to bed without checking on them? Ugh, these cases make me want to scream. These are not human beings, society needs them gone.

Where are the local African American church and community leadership
on this. What are they saying. Are there no speeches, marches for
justice, or candlelight vigils for this little girl? Where is the
sense of outrage. Tragedies like this never seem to have a large
footprint unless law enforcement can be implicated, or someone from
different race appears responsible.

The original poster is referring to the fact that if someone of a different race hurts/kills an African-American there are riots, there are speeches, there are marches, etc. But none of this happens when an African-American hurts/kills another African-American. And there should be. I think that if a church other than an AFrican-American church got involved as you are suggesting, it would cause riots, with African-Americans saying the whites are being racist by bringing attention to the fact that African-Americans are killing each other.

I am just as outraged over this story as I am over Ethan Stacey. Black, white or whatever color or race, these people are equally sick.
There are outcries over other children who are of "African American", what about Shaniya Davis, Anthony Bookal, Wylies Angel? Because they got more attention than some "white" children out there doesn't make it a racial issue. Why put these sad cases on a scale of who gets more screams and outcries?
I find anyone who starts bringing up any kind of racism on aggravated abuse and murder cases against children to be ignorant.
This story isn't about the race of the family or how much media attention it's grabbing, it's about the heart wrenching abuse and murder of a two year old.
