CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS/AP) The president of the University of Virginia says that the school was not aware of the violent past of George Huguely, suspect in the murder of UVA lacrosse player Yeardley Love.

The school did not know that during an arrest for public drunkenness in 2008, Huguely resisted, threatened the life of a female police officer, and had to be tasered by police. School officials didn't know, because Huguely didn't tell them.

According to Casteen in a press conference Wednesday, UVA students are required to self-report arrests, but acknowledged there is a critical gap in the law regarding informing colleges and universities, says FoxNews.

During this incident, Huguely was, according to a statement by police, visiting a friend at Washington & Lee in Lexington, Virginia and became intoxicated. A female officer attempted to arrest Huguely, but was met with fierce resistance. When the female officer attempted to cuff Huguely, he resisted, and a brief "tussle" ensued that eventually led to the young man getting tasered.

Casteen maintains that Huguely never reported any of this.

According to CBS affiliate WJZ, Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell has now called for a meeting with UVA's president, saying he "wants to study and fully consider every possible idea that could help prevent such a senseless crime from taking place in the future."

Huguely, 22, is accused of murdering former girlfriend and UVA classmate Yeardley Love. Love, 22, was found dead early Monday morning by police. Her body showed obvious signs of physical trauma. Court documents show police as saying that George Huguely admitted that he and Love were involved in an altercation during which Huguely shook Love and her head repeatedly hit a wall.

Make alcohol illegal in the United States and this wouldn't have occured. Spoiled rich kid drinks and gets out of control time after time with no consequences... big surprise there! At least we can take the alcohol out of his hands and then he is just an angry spoiled rich kid who doesn't commit murder from an alcohol fueled rage.

I am a high school teacher, and I frequently see examples of "athletes are special."...expecially if they are "good."
Many teachers (and principals) bend over backwards to make sure that they are fawned over and allowed to bend/break rules that get other students in trouble.

Even if the college claims it did not know Huguely assaulted a female police officer, the coach who is an agent of that college DID know that Huguely had gone into the room of another team player WHILE THAT PLAYER WAS ASLEEP and physically assaulted that student months PRIOR TO murdering Ms. Love. That coach swept that physical assault by Huguely under the rug. As the facts show, throughout Mr Huguely's life, his violent and/or criminal acts have been minimalized and he has received little or no consequences which has enabled his bad behavior to escalate to where it is today.

Even if the college claims it did not know Huguely assaulted a female police officer off-campus, the coach who is an agent of that college DID KNOW that Huguely had gone into the room of another team player WHILE THAT PLAYER WAS ASLEEP and physically assaulted that student months PRIOR TO murdering Ms. Love. A sad ending for a very young beautiful educated woman. Whey do these girls always get tied up with a loser. She should have put a long distance between herself and this man a long time ago. If she was afraid of him, she should have even went home and stayed with her parents. She would be alive now if she had've gone home. This no good creep deserves the death penalty. I don't care what his lawyer says, an accident, how does this creep of a lawyer sleep at night. You bounce someone's head of a wall and it is an accident, get real. He should get the death chamber. It is open season ex girlfriends and wives, these bastards have got to get the death penalty. Too much violence against women. Every day you pick up the paper and hear the news it gets worse. Things have got to change. My sympathy goes out to her family and friends. She should be starting a life after graudating and instead everyone is going to her funeral. Justice must be done.

"UVA Lacrosse death". There is a problem with this story name.

It is strange why the press insists on using this phrase, when the UVA had nothing to do with the crime, and I suspect, neither does the sport of lacrosse.

If you are a totally uninvolved lacrosse player at UVA, I would understand if you don't want to let people know what it is you do, and can understand why anyone showing the prerequisite and customary pride in their team at this point might be publicly humiliated.

So, did the UVA try to protect, or otherwise cover for the accused?

Was Lacrosse equipment used, or did the death occur whilst playing lacrosse?

If the answer is, as I suspect, no, then why is it being called a "UVA lacrosse death"?

It was a murder, pure and simple.

I know...i don't understand why they have it titled that either. Lacross didn't have anything to do with the murder. and the school didn't have anything to do with it. Yeah they both played lacross at that school but that doesn't have anything to do with the fact that there was a murder there.
