Romney Tells Letterman: Palin "Has a Rifle, You Know"

(CBS)
Likely 2012 Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney appeared on CBS's "Late Show with David Letterman" Tuesday as part of his tour to promote his new book, "No Apology: The Case for American Greatness."

Asked about potential rival Sarah Palin, Romney called her "terrific" and added, "she's got energy, passion." He then urged Letterman to "be careful what you say about her by the way," a reference to the feud between the two kicked off by Letterman's comments about Palin's daughter.

Letterman grinned and nodded, saying, "I've had my…," before trailing off as the audience began laughing.

Responded Romney: "She has a rifle, you know."

In his opening monologue, Letterman called Romney a "good looking Republican from Massachusetts," comparing him to new GOP senator Scott Brown, "but with pants."

The two men discussed cars and the auto industry, with Romney telling Letterman he drives a Ford Mustang. They also talked about Romney's father George, the former Michigan governor and auto executive.

They eventually turned to an incident in which Romney was punched on a flight departing from Vancouver last month.

"The fellow in the seat in front of my wife put his seat back during the takeoff procedure," said Romney, who said he "tapped him on the shoulder and reminded him" that the seat had to be upright for takeoff.

"He became somewhat agitated and they removed him from the airplane," Romney said. "He didn't like that, by the way, and gave me a good swat."

"And he broke my hair," Romney added, with a grin.

Later in the interview, the two men discussed the health care reform effort, with Romney saying "the problem is not the insurance companies." He said it was important to change the incentives to make health care more like a consumer market in order to control costs.

In his book, Romney criticizes President Obama for going "before so many foreign audiences to apologize for so many American misdeeds, both real and imagined."

"There are anti-American fires burning all across the globe; President Obama's words are like kindling to them," he writes, attacking Mr. Obama for "the steady stream of criticisms, put-downs, and jobs directed at the nation he was elected to represent and defend."

Romney kicked off the book tour Tuesday, appearing on ABC's "The View" and Fox News Channel's "Hannity" in addition to the "Late Show."

Many people deride Romney without investigating his positions and background well...he has done a great job in the private sector, in civic functions such as the SLC Olympics, and is now in a good spot (both poltically and by virtue of his vast experience turning around businesses to make them successful) to impact the American presidency like no one else. I don't know if he'll win in 2012, but he's already got my vote...

Now, CBS has to run the stats on how many watched Romney as opposed to those who watched Palin last night. Palin will win hands down. BTW, Rick Perry in TX won the primary with enough votes so he won't have to face a runoff, that's because of Palin's endorsement and campaign rally she had for him in Houston a few weeks ago. Compare that to 0bama's campaign stops for Corzine in NJ, Deeds in VA, Coakley in MA, 3 big loses in a row for him, plus he couldn't even draw a respectable crowd during any of his stops, Palin drew 10,000 for Perry.

Your point is that Palin is a bigger celebrity than the president? Face facts buddy, Palin has absolutely no chance of ever become president, even the majority of Republicans will tell you that one. She has a great celebrity appeal, but she just isn't smart enough. Have you ever seen her do a real press conference and answer tough questions and display a wealth of knowledge on any topic? No. Because she is incapable of answering tough questions and thinking on her feet. We need smart people in the White House. Deep thinkers. Not reality show-type celebrities like Sarah Palin......

I like the fact he said nice things about Palin and told Dave to be careful since she can kick his behind. I don't think she threatens him at all. He likes her just fine. He finds her amusing.

Oh really, Romney? Haven't you heard of the Blue Cross million dollar parties for their executive types, and the billion dollar profit Blue Cross made this past quarter? All this while denying coverage and letting people die. The problem IS the insurance companies. And the Republicans and conservatives. That's IT in a nutshell.

Just like a Republican and con defending the rich and greedy. America will never have true health care until the insurance and drug industries are stopped from practicing medicine. They need to be kicked out of our health care system once and for all.

No one should be denied ANY medical treatment in this rich country, but they are by the millions because the insurance industry has only one purpose: make as much money as possible by delivering a minimal of health care to the fewest people possible. That system will never serve true health care reform.

I lost any respect that I had for Romney when he was asked about why his sons were not in the armed services and replied that his boys were doing their duty to their country by attending business school.

That's what the republican party has become...a bunch of sabre rattling pantywaists that call for war but shelter their own family members from it. Maybe some servicemen don't mind laying their lives on the line so the elite ruling class can send their children to business school, but I'm of the opinion that this guy is just another Vietnam era deferment republican politician.

So we shouldn't respect any politician if their kids are not serving in the military?

In response to the joking around, if I may be so bold to state that america is sick of the liars and zealots and those false representatives in offices responsible for our nation who have done nothing but sell our livelihoods, our economic vitality, and betrayed the constitution.
In the east coast WTC is held up by the mafia, and on the west coast the Bay Bridge is still being rebuilt, now 21 years after the earthquake made it necessary to rebuild..and the nerve to call it "on schedule"...the materials are all being made in China....Shame again...Shame SHAME Shame.

I think after the one-term, training-wheels Obama presidency the American people will be clamoring for an experienced, wise and competent leader like Mitt Romney.

This "training wheels" administration as you call it in it's first year has already out-performed the two-term dubya in regards to Afghanistan, allies' cooperation and the economy...

Romeny might be intelligent but the lies roll off his lips like water down a river. Typical repugnant cr*p spewing out his mouth. President Obama has more brains in his little finger and as a mtter of fact easily beat romney in the election. A few months ago he complained Obama spent too much time in his office. Now he has him traveling the globe and apologizing for American behavior - that is simply not true. Study the repugnants b4 u support them. They stand for big corps and the rich. hey if that's whay you are fine, but if not, they're only going to make things worse like the last 8 years of bush. Anyone wonder where all the good jobs have gone??? bush and team gave tax breaks to corps who outsourced. That's about as stupid and one term as it should get!
