Michelle Obama Calls for Donations for Haiti in TV Ad

First Lady Michelle Obama has taped a Public Service Announcement to call on Americans to donate to help the victims of the devastating earthquake in Haiti.

"The images from Haiti are heartbreaking," Obama said in the 30-second ad. "Homes, hospitals and schools destroyed. Families searching for loved ones. Parents trying to feed their children. But we can all do something. We can help the American Red Cross as it delivers the food, water and medicine that can save lives." (you can watch the ad at left)

The ad, created in conjunction with the Red Cross and the Ad Council, is expected run on all major broadcast and cable channels.

The first lady asks viewers to donate $10 by texting "Haiti" to 90999. People can also donate by calling call 1-800-Red Cross or visiting the Red Cross Web site.

CBS News White House correspondent Mark Knoller reports that more than $8 million has been raised by this morning through the text message campaign that implemented by the Red Cross with the assistance of the U.S. State Department and the promotion by the administration.
