Could Scott Brown Defeat Martha Coakley in Massachusetts Senate Battle?

The Massachusetts race for the late Ted Kennedy's Senate seat is intensifying, in the wake of some polls suggesting the race may be closer than Democrats anticipated.

GOP candidate Scott Brown, who faces off against Democratic state Attorney General Martha Coakley in a Jan. 19 special election, held a "money bomb" online event on Monday on the Web site RedInvadesBlue.com, raising more than $1.3 million over the course of the day. Brown's effort received a boost from Minnesota's Republican Gov. Tim Pawlenty, who promoted the online fundraising event, the Hill reports.

The Coakley campaign has revved up its efforts to counter any momentum Brown may have. They launched a negative ad Monday asking, "Who is Scott Brown really? A Republican in lockstep with Washington Republicans." Coakley reinforced her message Monday night in a debate against Brown that he would support a return to Bush-era economic policies, the Boston Globe reports.

The Democratic establishment has also signaled that Coakley may have to put up more of a fight: The Democratic National Committee has sent its national press secretary, Hari Sevugan, to Boston to help the campaign, while the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee has sent media consultant Michael Meehan to help.

Various polls in the state have had mixed results, a concerning sign for Democrats in a solidly blue state. A Boston Globe poll gave Coakley a solid 15-point lead, and recent internal Democratic polling also gave Coakely a double-digit lead. However, Public Policy Polling put Brown ahead by one point, and a recent Rasmussen poll put Coakley ahead by a nine-point margin.

In the week up to the election, Brown could benefit from some high-profile endorsements. The State Police Association of Massachusetts endorsed the Republican Monday, and the Boston Herald endorsed him in an editorial today.

"Sometimes one vote can make a difference," the Herald editorial staff wrote, "especially if it's one vote on the floor of the U.S. Senate."

Indeed, Democrats are ratcheting up efforts to support Coakley for exactly that reason: If Brown wins next week, he could foil Democrats' plans to pass their health care bill in the Senate with their 60-vote majority.

DNC group Organizing for America sent an e-mail signed by President Obama to its supporters, asking for help in the Coakley campaign, and former President Bill Clinton will campaign for her in Boston this Friday.

Meanwhile, Brown responded to Coakley's negative ad with an ad of his own, in which he criticizes the negative spot against him and says, "The old way of doing things won't work anymore."

After researching both Scott Brown & Martha Coakley, I find that Scott would be the best canidate to truely represent both the state and the USA.
Martha would just be a clone of OBama and push his socialists agenda every step of the way. Don't believe the attack ads that the Dems are pushing, its more of the same old tricks because they have no logical arguement or solutions,so all they know how to do is attack those who could do better.

I disagree with you. I don't believe either candidate is the best candidate for the state nor the USA. One other thing: If you believe Obama offers a socialist agenda....where in the hell have you been for the past 31 years? LOL Me thinks that you are a dollar late and a dollar short there buddy! LOL

Brown is a favorite, especially among Independent Contractors in the state of Massachusetts. This state has some of the most crippling laws on the books for these people. In the battle against cheaters....many true Independent Contractors have had difficulty in being self-employed under this state's stringent laws. Brown is promising to take another look at these laws and fight for the right for IC's to actually work as self-employed individuals, and not forced to be employees. If Coakley had made that promise she might very well have a strong lead right now!

One of you tell me why are the GOP's on the side of big BIG BIG BIG insurance companies, and not on our side? By our side I mean the middle class , we have needed our Government to step up for us for a long time. Why is there this debate about health care reform? It is badly neded, the middle class is suffereing in many ways because of the insurance industry, and yet This man may win in Mass. Tell me how this helps middle America? Are you folks getting help with your insurance from a source I don't know about? Do you not know at least one person who for no fault of thier own does not today have insurance? I am lost to eXplain any of this in terms I can get my mind around. When all else fails you will start in on abortion and Mexicans as the reason. BESIDES THAT......what's up with America?

Well, yo uare mistaken. That's why you think this.

Both sides are o nthe side of BIG, BIG, BIG insurance companies.

The government has stepped in for decades, which is why we have this mess! They helped create the monopolies the insurance companies have. They made it easy for them to do what they do.

How about a free market, wherer the insurance companies have to compete for my healthcare dollar, and the government stays the heck out of it??

Middle America is being raped by the government. You need to wake up?

You view insurance and pharmaceutical companies as the enemy, yet they save millions upon millions of lives every year. Your policies will cost lives through health care rationing.

We see it here in Oregon, where the government sends people with cancer letters saying they won't pay for treatment, but they WILL pay for euthanasia. That is government-run health care for you.

Our health care system is the best in the world. It can be improved (nothing is perfect), but Democrats are hell-bent on destroying it and replacing it with horrible socialist medicine.

Here is a video I found that describes why Brown is even in this race:

Voters gave Democrats the benefit of the doubt, and after a year of seeing the lies and what their true agenda is, voters have recoiled in horror.

If Massachusetts is barely able to elect a Democrat Senator after a yeear of their shenanigans, imagine what is gong to happen elsewhere, where traditionally independent and Republican districts went out on a limb and took a chance with Democrats. This is going to be a slaughter.

Give me a break. Real, honest republican - what a joke! Of course he would block health care reform but not because he's a real representative of the people. No, that would be to help the companies (not people) he represents. Health ins companies, big pharma and large corporations do not need more representations in congress!!! President Obama is not a dictator, the rich, and the coprs are ditacting how you live with their (*& advertising money - do not believe it!!!!

He would block the healthcare boondoggle being proposed, not reform. What is on the Hill right now isnt reform.

Democrats and Republicans agree: Massachusetts deserves much better than Martha Coakley and Deval Patrick!

I called both my Senators today to ask, "If Scott Brown wins in Massachusetts next week, will you WAIT UNTIL HE IS SEATED to proceed on health care, or will you ignore the will of the people?" No answer, yet, but it's a question that needs to be asked--and answered. Call 202-224-3121 to see what your Senator says!
