This poll was taken as part of CBS News' "Where America Stands" series, an in-depth look at where the country stands today on key topics and an outlook for the future decade.

Just one in three Americans are very confident that the food they buy is safe, a new CBS News poll finds – although the vast majority are at least somewhat confident that their food is safe.

Thirty-two percent say they are "very confident" about the safety of the food they buy, while 52 percent are "somewhat confident." The remaining 16 percent say they are not too confident or not at all confident in the safety of their food.

These results are reflected in the grades Americans give the country on ensuring the safety of the food supply. The most commonly offered grades were C, chosen by 34 percent of those surveyed, and B, chosen by 33 percent.

Just seven percent gave the country an A when it comes to keeping the food supply safe. Eighteen percent offered a D, and six percent served up a failing grade.

(CBS)
A person's faith in the food supply may have something to do with the food they can afford. Those with high incomes are more confident in the safety of the food supply than those who earn comparatively less.

Forty-two percent of Americans who make more than $100,000 are very confident the food they buy is safe. Just 24 percent of those who make less than $30,000 say the same.

Men are more likely than women to be very confident that the food they buy is safe, and college graduates are more likely that those with less education to say so.

The region where Americans have the most trust in the food supply is the Midwest. Americans in the South have the least trust in the food supply.

This poll was conducted among a random sample of 1,048 adults nationwide, interviewed by telephone December 17-22, 2009. Phone numbers were dialed from random digit dial samples of both standard land-line and cell phones. The error due to sampling for results based on the entire sample could be plus or minus three percentage points. The error for subgroups is higher.

I am very confident of food safety, and I know how Republicans would love to remove the cost of the government infrastructure that actually helps us. Republicans are not to be trusted. They would be happy if there was not much government over our backs or any government to stop food suppliers from delivering unhealthy or unsanitary food supplies to consumers.

I recall a Republican President - Ronald Reagan, who sought to call Ketchup a food, so it could be qualified for a government subsidy on the national school lunch program...which meant assured profit for the tomato growers who lobbied him to advance their wealth at our expense. Fortunately, Democrat House Leader Tip O'Neal saw right through the scam.

You recall badly. A member of his administration, while discussing food guidelines commented that they were so vague that technically ketchup would qualify as a serving of vegetables. He never suggested using it as such but the extreme left has morfed it into one of their favorite truisms, much like "I can see Russia from my porch". Lie often enough and it becomes part of the county's lore, and hard to distinguish from truth. A tactic much used by both parties.

Do what your Mom says, shut up and eat your vegetables. Chance your next meal will kill you = 1 in 73000. That's chance I can believe in.

We are never going to be able to make our food supply totally 'safe'... that is the main reason why the SMART PEOPLE out there say that you should always cook food well and eat almost NOTHING raw... not even veggies, which you are advised to steam them or, if you want them in a salad, buy ones that have been though that new radiation process that kills most of the bacteria and viruses on the food.

The Government is paying our farmers not to plant, and we are importing food. Sure doesn't make a whole lot of sense. What's wrong with growing and consuming food from the good old USA?

Our own government can't protect us from other countries and the food contaminants! We're screwed! As long as the prez has his foods home grown...that's all that really matters!

Simply making sure the produce you buy is thoroughly washed would cure a great percentage of the problem.

Makes me wonder about polls: how many people have quit eating?
