DeMint: Obama "Has Downplayed Terrorism"

(CBS)
Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., said he was encouraged that President Barack Obama talked openly about the "systemic failures" involving the attempted Christmas bombing of Northwest Flight 253, but criticized him for not focusing more on terrorism since taking office.

"The president has downplayed terrorism since he took office. He doesn't use the word anymore," DeMint told "Early Show" co-anchor Harry Smith. "He waited eight months to nominate someone as head of [the Transportation Security Administration] and then they wanted to rush it through without any debate or roll call vote. So the focus on terror as a threat is real important and I'm glad to see that the president has stated the goal of finding out what went wrong so we can fix it."

Umar Farouq Abdulmutallab, a 23-year-old Nigerian who was on a U.S. watch list, failed in his attempt to detonate an explosive device on the Amsterdam-to-Detroit flight, prompting intense scrutiny of the government's failure to identify him as a security threat.

Abdulmutallab leading up to the attack and his family took their concerns about his increasingly extremist religious views to the U.S. embassy in Nigeria in November.

Special Report: The Christmas Day Terror Attack

Months prior, the CIA began picking up information on a person dubbed "the Nigerian," but failed to make the connection to Abdulmutallab, reports CBS News chief investigative correspondent Armen Keteyian.

"It clearly is a problem with our intelligence system not talking to each other … we put homeland security together in order that these agencies would talk together and the fact that they're not on something that seems so obvious is disturbing," said DeMint.

But while DeMint chastised the president for , he faces criticism himself for blocking a vote on Mr. Obama's nominee for the post, police detective Erroll Southers.

DeMint has placed a hold on Southers because of concerns the new agency chief would allow TSA screeners join a labor union.

"When they move ahead with the transportation security head and say his stated goals is to unionize rather than to focus on security, I think it is something we should have a discussion about on the senate floor and have a roll call vote," DeMint said.

DeMint said the president "is more focused on coming through with a campaign promise to unions rather than keeping transportation security focused on the real security of American passengers."

I would not say that Obama is soft on terror, but I would say he is very confused by it. Actually during some recent testimony with the Fed chairman, DeMint came fully loaded with facts and crushed Bernanke by using his own words against him. Since I think the Federal Reserve should be audited, it was nice to see Bernanke squirm.

Janet Napolitano should be immediately replaced. Obama had to come in a second say just to clean up her mess. This administration is arrogant, sloppy, naive, and I am beginning to think unable to just implement simple tasks.

HEAD SHOULD ROLL ASAP. There is absolutely no excuse for the Xmas day bomber. Obama needed to come home days ago as well. The fact that the bomb failed doesn't mean the plot failed. The terrorist WON. We lost and Obama is still playing golf.

Why is it that DeMint yaps about Obama downplaying terrorism out one side of his mouth while out the other side he is playing politics with our security by blocking the Homeland Security nomination over, of all things, unions!? Come on, I'm just as scared of unions as the next guy with an MBA, but I'm even more scared of a man who's willing to shove high explosives down his shorts. It's not like TSA is a hotbed of innovation, folks.

While the USA was too busy looking for WMD in Iraq, Al-Qaeda was too busy creating new cells worldwide including inside the USA and the Taliban was too busy re-grouping in Afghan. Where is OBL? Triple Blunders.

Options to enter USA:
1) By Plane
2) By Ship
3) By Land via Canada or Mexico

While the USA is too busy making Air Travel impossible, Al-Qaeda is too busy entering by Land or Ship.

Message:

If you want more irresponsible hypocrits who are more concerned with tearing down the President and the Country than with helping to constructively improve security for this Country - VOTE REPUBLICAN"

If you care about constructivle improving security, Vote Democrat.

All placed below DeMint's mug. What a treat.

How could we possably not remember terrorists after at least 6 years of scare tactics from the retardlicans. I am sure that everyone is worn out emotionaly by this 6 year non stop scare tatic employed by the party of fear. Now after their rain of fright is up we are still bombarded with their echo of fear. The people of this great country are much smarter for the most part (except for the repubic diehards) then to be swayed by their old boogyman is ah commin to get ya montra. We the people are over indoctronated so cut us some slack and shut your chain rattling down as you are insulting our intelligence.

Sure is easy to SECOND GUESS what should have been done....

So, ask Bush why Iraq in 2003 when Afghanistan was not done and Al Qaeda and Osama bin Ladin were not captured.

What was the Bush plan for the end of the war? Hmm?

Just asking...seems to be a big Republican conspiracy to blame Democrats when the Republicans were in charge at the time. Now, the most they can do is demean, slander, pop off and I sure don't hear any constructive alternatives. Do you hear any alternatives?

I keep hearing Sarah Palin who knows zip....and D*ick Cheney, spew stuff that is nowhere near constructive. Please ignore these persons of bland ilk and "I wanna" who seem to have an agenda to fool the public as they have already done. Palin, I would guess, would pardon or protect Cheney, should she get elected somehow.

Ever wonder why Bush almost kept Ms. Harriet Meiers on as a Supreme Court nominee, a personal attorney with NO judicial qualifications to speak of? Bet you won't find that in the Dallas library, but you can guess that at least ONE judge would not vote for any extradition of former presidents and other administration executives to the ICC at the Hague.

Demint is a bonafide liar. The War on terrorism has not been downplayed. What in the world does he think sending additional troops to Afghanistan is doing to fight terrorism? Obviously, he has the intelligence of a fence post.

Correct, it has been downplayed (i.e. bought into) so much that additional troops are being sent to Afghanistan.

But the snake is just growing heads elsewhere. So the militarization theory doesn't work.

Demint is a bonafide liar. He is blocking the nomination of the Transportation Secretary due to potential unionization of the TSA. How can this ridiculous windbag be of service to the nation? Yes, by stepping down and hopefully someone from South Carolina will have the intelligence to do what is right for the country.

Republicans always said they are number one in against terrorists why they could not catch Bin Ladin and prevented September 11, 2001. All republicans just talkative and could not do anything. How is about Richard Reid for shoe bomber, why they did criticse.
