Obama: We Will Do Everything Possible to Keep America Safe

President Obama pledged to do everything possible to keep America safe in his first public comments since a Christmas Day attempt to blow up Northwest Flight 253 as it was landing in Detroit.

"As a nation, we will do everything in our power to protect our country," Mr. Obama said. (watch the full statement at left)

"This was a serious reminder of the dangers that we face and the nature of those who threaten our homeland," he added. "Had the suspect succeeded in bringing down that plane, it could have killed nearly 300 passengers and crew, innocent civilians preparing to celebrate the holidays with their families and friends."

Mr. Obama made the 10-minute remarks from Hawaii where he is currently on vacation. The president had faced criticism from Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., and others that he had not been visible enough in the aftermath of the attempted attack.

"This is a teaching moment, to use the president's term. And I believe that he or the secretary or the vice president or the attorney general should be out there reminding the American people, saying this shows how deadly this enemy is," CBS' "Face the Nation.". "This shows how real this threat is and why we have to do whatever we possibly can to protect the American people." (Read more about King's statements.>)

In his remarks, Mr. Obama was clear to point out that he had been in contact and working even though he is in Hawaii, noting that he spoke to senior officials this morning and that he told them to "continue monitoring the situation to keep the American people and members of Congress informed."

Mr. Obama also outlined the steps his administration was taking over the short and long term in the wake of the incident.

"A full investigation has been launched into this attempted act of terrorism, and we will not rest until we find all who were involved and hold them accountable," Mr. Obama said.

A 23-year-old Nigerian, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, has been charged in the attempted attack. Just prior to the president's remarks, an al Qaeda branch in Yemen claimed responsibility in an Internet posting.

The president also said he directed his national security team to "keep up the pressure on those who would attack our country."

"We do not yet have all the answers about this latest attempt, but those who would slaughter innocent men, women and children must know that the United States will do more than simply strengthen our defenses," he said. "We will continue to use every element of our national power to disrupt, to dismantle and defeat the violent extremists who threaten us, whether they are from Afghanistan or Pakistan, Yemen or Somalia, or anywhere where they are plotting attacks against the U.S. homeland."

As for steps to ensure the safety of air travel, the president said he ordered "immediate steps to ensure the safety of the traveling public."

"We made sure that all flights still in the air were secure and could land safely," he said. "We immediately enhanced screening and security procedures for all flights, domestic and international. We added federal air marshals to flights entering and leaving the United States."

(CBS)
Mr. Obama then discussed the two reviews he ordered after the incident – one which will look at the watch list system and another which examines airport screening "policies, technologies and procedures."

"We need to determine just how the suspect was able to bring dangerous explosives aboard an aircraft and what additional steps we can take to thwart future attacks," he said.

The president also had a message for the American people to not only "remain vigilant" but also to "be confident."

"Those plotting against us seek not only to undermine our security, but also the open society and the values that we cherish as Americans," he said. "This incident, like several that have preceded it, demonstrates that an alert and courageous citizenry are far more resilient than an isolated extremist."

Mr. Obama added: "As Americans, we will never give in to fear or division. We will be guided by our hopes, our unity, and our deeply held values. That's who we are as Americans; that's what our brave men and women in uniform are standing up for as they spend the holidays in harm's way. And we will continue to do everything that we can to keep America safe in the new year and beyond."

Following his remarks on the attempted terror attack, Mr. Obama also addressed Sunday's Iranian government crackdown of protesters in which at least eight people were killed.

"The United States joins with the international community in strongly condemning the violent and unjust suppression of innocent Iranian citizens, which has apparently resulted in detentions, injuries, and even death," he said. (Read more on Mr. Obama's comments about Iran>)

Come on barack, your brain dead worshipers may actually believed you but the rest of us know it's not true.
Since obama took over, more terrorists are attacking us and we get less respects around the world.
Respect is earned barack, just because you said so doesn't mean you will get it.

I'm not quite sure how not wanting my plane to be bombed in mid-air by some lunatic terrorist that has trained in Yemen (where Obama himself said they are sending Gitmo prisoners because they have the capabilities to deal with them - a ha ha ha a ha ha ha - obviously!?!) makes me an ultra-conservative.

Right, misinformation - keep drinking that koolaid:

http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2009/12/obama-administration-transfers-12-detainees-to-yemen-afghanistan-somaliland.html

********************

Obviously you didn't read your own link. It does not back up your statement or give credence to your fears.

The kool-aid reference ... that is not only ridiculous, it is offensive. You might look into some news stories and understand that people lost loved ones to the deranged "god complex" of an ACTUAL madman.

Comparing folks who merely disagree with you politically to these lost souls is despicable. Period.

Oh and by the way ... a FACT for you:

Two [at least] of the 500 Gitmo detainees that were released during the Bush administration are now the leaders of the Al Quaeda group in YEMEN!

The six detainees that were released about two weeks ago -- were still in Gitmo when the NW Airlines bomber purchased his ticket.

This petty blame peddling by the right wing is so typical of them. We should all be so grateful that we dodged this bullet and have the opportunity to buttress some weaknesses. Bad things happen...it is unreasonable to expect that they won't, particularly when we have as dedicated an enemy as Al Qaeda. But we must be just as dedicated and determined to undermine their every attempt to ruin our way of life. We must sharpen our skills at predicting who is a terrorist. That means intelligence in the field in greater numbers, cooperation with our allies, and beefing up our airport security here and abroad.

To President Obama

During your campaign I was probably one of your most staunch defenders on these sites, constantly rebuffing the neocon racists who tried every coded n-word they could think of to defeat your campaign.

But I also posted a caveat, that if it turned out that you would continue Bush policies, I would become just as staunch an opponent.

I celebrated your election as the truly historic event it was, and as you settled into office, I continue to this day, to rebuff the racists who believe you don't belong there.

Sadly however, it seems that day has come, Mr. President, where I must, in the strongest terms possible, raise my voice in opposition to your current foreign policy.

The assumption, ever since Johnson, that you could bomb, and murder countries into submission to corporate interests, using the lives and assets of our military as a free mercenary service for those corporations, has proven to be the disastrous lunacy that we always knew it was,

The bombing attempts upon us are in fact not attacks, but counter-attacks by those our government's more corrupt leaders, and business, have harmed.

The idea, as advanced by the neocon war mongers, that is would be "better to fight them there rather than here", has also shown itself to be the idiotically false choice many of us knew it would be.

By continuing military hostility against countries that never attacked us, you force them to counter-attack with whatever means at their disposal, since they obviously cannot match our military strength, they are forced into guerilla tactics, and as long as we keep slaughtering them, they will continue to attempt retaliation.

Fight them over there, rather than here? Because of our arrogance, they obviously are already here.

Bush's agitprop machine tapped into the world-renowned American intolerance and racism, in order to escalate this conflict. It didn't matter to Bush, in fact, if it was encouraged by his agitprop pushers to support it as a religious pogrom, as many American suckers now believe it is, and you have done almost nothing to suggest differently,

It is logically to be expected that Muslims, as well as non "White" ethnic groups around the world might begin to doubt your sincerity in regards to stopping this madness, or even assuring them that this is not somehow a war against a religion, and seeking, as you said you would, the road to peace through co-existence.

I do understand that if there was reason to suspect you would kill the cash cow of the war profiteers, you would never have made it to office alive.

Having said that however, it is my duty as a human, and a "Black" American, to remind you of the outcome of a certain book by Harriet Beecher Stowe.

In the end, Uncle Tom was sold three times, and finally beaten to death by those he sought to protect and defend.

Yes, I'm afraid that Obama turned out to be Clintonian in nature and definitely not as progressive as promised.

Still, McCain and Hillary would have been more hawkish.

Agreed, any other choice would have been far, far worse.

Having said that however, the Bush actions and policies being continued under the current administration still constitute violations of domestic and international law.

The sad irony is no matter how much he tries to appease the right-wing war mongers, he will never be anything other, in their eyes, than an n-word.

I could have sworn Dick Cheney gave barack-o-boy a serious reminder a few months ago. o-bum-o had more than a year to review security procedures and made the decision to attack Yemeni's. I'm sure his only action will be finding a way to blame George W for this.

Of course, open a third front in an already lost fake "war", attack yet another country, create even more angry people, spread the scope of genocide for no reason, and run up the bill even higher for the war mongers' profit.

But just like most deadbeats, when the time comes to pay for it, you will be one of the loudest screaming "No taxes! Waahhh! Waahhh!"

In my youth, we used to call that "selling woof tickets, but unable to put on the woof show."
