MoveOn Opposes Senate Health Bill

The liberal grassroots group MoveOn.org, which claims five million members, announced to its membership today that it is joining the liberal opposition to the Senate health care bill.

In an e-mail sent out today, the group is asking its supporters to sign a petition urging liberal senators like Bernie Sanders, the Independent from Vermont who has serious reservations about the bill, to block its passage.

"The latest Senate health care bill has no public option. No expansion of Medicare. And it does too little to guarantee that uninsured Americans will actually be able to afford the coverage they'll be required to purchase," the e-mail reads. "But it's not too late to fix the bill. And as Joe Lieberman has shown, just one senator willing to stand in the way can force legislation to be changed dramatically."

MoveOn says their members overwhelmingly support the House health care bill but oppose the Senate bill as it now stands. They also cite recent polls showing growing opposition to it among liberals generally -- "the very folks Democrats in Washington count on to volunteer and donate to their campaign," according to MoveOn.

by mmoses418 December 20, 2009 11:22 AM EST: I just finished watching and I am surprised that on a CBS station which is also the home of 60 min. Not that long ago they did a story of how billions of dollars are being stolen from Medicare. To those wondering how to pay for health care how about cracking down and stopping those who are stealing from honest people who don't have any coverage and literally dying because of it. Another thought, maybe we shouldn't give criminals 100% coverage? What is the cost of that? There are still veterans in this country that slip through the cracks. I am a cancer survivor and my premiums go up and up. I can never change or have another company compete because "pre-existing", how convenient for the Insurance Companies.

We are Americans and deserve to have fair coverage for all.

by watkinsjr2000 December 18, 2009 9:38 PM EST: Let me start by stating I'm a TRUE BELIEVER on the issue of health care reform.Wanting to see reform pass has been the great political passion of my adult life.It's bad enough that the GOP opposition to reform legislation is unanimous.But, it's inexcusable when some on the political left join the GOP in opposition to the Senate bill.

I have but one question for those on the left now fighting passage of this bill:Have you people totally lost your damned minds? You seem to be demanding perfection. In a perfect world I'd be in favor of a strong public option myself, but this is hardly a perfect world. The votes to pass a public option are just not there. It's not going to happen. The congress either has to pass what's on the table now or all hope of any health care reform will be lost for years & years.There won't be 60 democratic votes in the senate after the 2010 elections & talk of passing reform through reconsiliation is just plain moronic. The way reconsiliation is set up makes it impossible to pass a new program of this scope using it.

I'm pragmatic enough to support a bill that would give health insurance to over 30 million now without coverage and ban insurance companies from discriminating against people with pre-existing conditions.This is a worthy start that can be improved upon later. Why you people would rather have 100% of nothing rather than what this Senate bill would offer just totally escapes me.I'm particularly disgusted that Move On, Howard Dean, & Keith Olbermann have chosen to so vocally work to kill this bill.They are all showing themselves to be politically naive dolts with their criticism.

The only thing else I can say is that these actions show me that the far left has as many nutcases as the far right does.I have just had it with the actions of these damned fools on this issue.; Reply to this comment

Each of you are looking for someone to blame on americas behalf for all of the problems our once great country is now facing. You no longer have to search. each member only has to look in the mirror. As an american I am ashamed of all of you. Continually blaming everyone, Congress is a collective effort serving only to help the Country and as is apparent by the state of our country in all aspects (legislative, executive and judicial) the entire body of congress has failed us. You were put there to watch out for us and if AMERICANS need someone to blame start at your Congressional Rep! Our country did not fall apart overnight it is Congress' unwillingness to stand up for whats right and not only the the readily available dollar being lined in their pockets. SOCIALIST helping Hussein Obama II De-Facto, to give billions and trillions of our money(which does not exist)to make sure our Country goes Bankrupt. They want to destroy the United States of America by destroying the Constiution(gov. reform bill under guise of health-reform)which citizens got wise to even though Obama tried to hide it(wait till the last min to show; not put on C-Span like promised). Now they are just going to rough shod giving out OUR money until we collapse. Then they will install Federal Marshall LAW wtih tyranny over the people(recently passed too)to insert their Communism, Socialism,Marxism(all same) and we will have full blown Holocaust....then we will see the death camps.
