Obama Approval Rating Falls to 50 Percent

President Obama's job approval rating sits at 50 percent in the latest CBS News/New York Times poll, the lowest level it has reached in CBS News polling.

The president still has a net favorable rating, with 50 percent approving of his performance and 39 percent disapproving. But as Mr. Obama has confronted challenges ranging from the economy to the war in Afghanistan to health care, public perception of his handling of his job has steadily fallen.

In April, Mr. Obama's approval rating was 68 percent. By August, it was down to 56 percent. It dropped to 53 percent last month before falling another three points in the latest poll.

Democrats still largely back the president, with 82 percent expressing their approval. Just 19 percent of Republicans approve of his performance, however, and independents are split: 43 percent approve of his performance and 41 percent disapprove.

Americans cite the economy as the issue most important to them, and on that issue the president's approval rating has been in decline. It now sits at 47 percent, down two points from last month and down seven points from October.

On health care, one in two Americans has an unfavorable view of the president. Just 42 percent have a favorable view.

The poll does show a bright spot for the president on Afghanistan, however. Forty-eight percent now approve of his performance in handling the war, up ten points from last month. Thirty-eight percent disapprove.

Read the Complete Poll

Mr. Obama's approval rating on Afghanistan stood at 58 percent in April, but it had been dropping before last week, when he gave a primetime address laying out his new strategy for the war. That strategy includes the deployment of 30,000 additional troops.

The increase in his approval rating on the issue can be attributed to improved perceptions by Republicans and independents. Forty-two percent of Republicans now approve of the president's handling of Afghanistan, up 19 points from last month. Forty-five percent of independents approve, an increase of 15 points.

The president's speech is not being widely hailed for clarifying his new strategy, however. Asked if Mr. Obama has clearly explained his plan for Afghanistan, just 42 percent of those surveyed said yes. Forty-seven percent said no.

While a slim majority approve of the president's plan to deploy more troops in Afghanistan, there is opposition to setting a date for troop withdrawal. For more on that portion of the poll, check out this post on findings on Afghanistan.

Obama Approval Rate - I find it strange that their's so many people that fail to realize that Obama can't change in 11 months what the Bush Administration created in 8years. Obama is a meer man he's not God. He took on a job that no one that's answering this poll would've taken.

This guy has pulled the country back from the brink of economic disaster, passed the largest middle class tax cut in history, reigned in abusive credit card hikes, outlined a regulatory overhaul to curb hedge-fund excesses and created a new agency to protect consumers, cut deals to slash drug prices for seniors by $80 billion and hospital costs by $100 billion, empowered FDA to regulate tobacco, lifted Bush restrictions on stem cell research, secured EPA authority to limit climate-warming pollution under the Clean Air Act, committed the US to a treaty phasing out toxic mercury, has made the right decisions about Afghanistan (where AL QAEDA is, remember them Republican Iraq war lovers?), is inches away from fixing health care, and in case anyone out there didn't notice, unemployment went DOWN last month...this is just some of the good stuff that's happened in less than a year and it amazes me there are actually people who wish Sarah Palin was president. LMAO.

This report is based on a CBS/NY Times poll.

When this same poll has President Obama's "numbers" up.... so many that are opposed to him say: "this is a biased poll"; "they only polled Democrats"; "the mainstream media lies"... etc, etc.

But when the numbers go down, they accept the polling as fact.

(of course, this happens in the reverse as well... not as stridently, but it does...)

========================================

Folks, this is why we can't take these constant-24/7 (!!) OPINION polls as anything more than a snapshot on a given day.

Numbers go up, they go down. We don't get told the wording of the questions asked, the time of day the polls were taken (important as to working/non-working people), where the calls were made (area codes/locales) and various other information that would have a lot of bearing on WHO is giving their opinion and WHY.

I have voted in every election since I came of age ... definitely a "likely voter" -- and I have never been polled. I don't know anyone who has ever been polled. Maybe, I just know people who like to use "Caller ID"... who knows...?
My point is, I don't take these polls with more than a casual consideration -- whether they reflect my views on any given day... or not.

It will do you all good to remember that in matters of our elected representatives -- local, state and national -- the ONLY polls that count have ballots.

It's 2009... a LOT can happen in a year, or two or three...

Please don't think the OPINIONS of approximately 1000 people make what you think automatically valid, any more than when those opinions disagree with your own.

We all know what an opinion poll is.

We know this is just a poll, that it could be biased, that there are 2 years left for your hero to prove himself, etc

Feeling a little insecure maybe?

Only 4 groups approve of Obama:
1. Naive females
2. Gay males
3. Metrosexuals
4. Blacks

which are you?

No real man supports Obama. Period.

Well, he is staying ahead of Congress' rating..for now. Those guys are what, around 20% overall and 17% with Independents. Prime example of why the Pres and Congress' ratings continue to fall. Health Care debate:
Dorgan introduces an amendment to allow the importation of drugs (co-sponsored by 19 other Senators). The Wh raises a flag and says "no" ..PhRma has put way too much money into passing this farce of a bill. Menendez D-NJ offers every ridiculous reason under the sun to vote no..just so happens NJ houses just about every major PhRMA industry. So, while beating up those mean Repubs, take a look at the other side. The largest savings to the poor will probably not even come to a vote. No wonder polls continue to slide when money still rules the day. The WH and the Dems in the tank with PhRMA should cause these poll numbers to drop even more. LA gets $300 mil. Florida gets to grandfather in Advantage members. Good grief!! I'm sure even more shady deals are underway.

Letting drugs be shipped in to undercut US Pharma would be a disaster to medical research and new drug development. You have no clue how much it costs to develop a new drug. I am a screaming Liberal and even I understand that much. I am not going into the many other reasons that it would be a mistake, this one is just my favorite.

Wow, shouldn't you people be watching Fox? It always amazes me how many of you who hate the mainstream media and its "left wing bias" spend so much time here boosting its advertising circulation.

You have to keep your eye on the enemy. It's an excellent way to keep track of what products not to buy!

Sometimes a president has to make unpopular and difficult decisions that will pay off in the long run. Bush left such a godawful mess behind him that whoever cleaned it up would have to make some hard decisions. A president who is afraid of a dip in the polls at this stage would be so desperate that he could achieve nothing. Unfortunately too many of the American people would give a president who gave them cake and icecream every day a 90% rating.

You had better get informed buddy. Bush was just the figure head. The House and Senate wrote and passed the bills. When they were controlled by the Democrats and Republicans, they are all guilty. Oh ya Obama is also, he never objected or voted against anything.
by michaelm07 December 10, 2009 3:36 AM EST
Yeah and even those numbers are kind to this president, they will drop further. His worthless discussion/meetings with breakout groups where he circulates like a college professor from group to group bestowing his support and wisdom is the most worthless stuff I have ever seen. Sadly the bar has been so lowered and he has turned the American Presidency into a total joke. He is soooo in over his head and surrounded by other idiots who all double as pseudo-intellectuals. Almost all of them in Washinton, on both sdes of the aisle, deserve to lose their jobs.

But, we can look forward to the Obama/Oprah show-not! It reminds me of that scene in Clockwork Orange where they pried his eyelids open. Think of the nausea you will experience!
