Bob Schieffer: The Salahis Ought to Be Prosecuted

Michaele and Tareq Salahi's intrusion into the White House state dinner was more than an affront to White House protocol, according to CBS News chief Washington correspondent Bob Schieffer -- it was an affront to the American people, for which they must be punished.

"I think the government ought to prosecute these people," Schieffer said today on the CBS Early Show. "If that means sending them to jail, so be it."

The Salahis managed to attend portions of the White House's first state dinner last month, even though they had not been invited. The Northern Virginia couple's entry into the party was the subject of scrutiny at a congressional hearing yesterday. They were asked to testify before Congress but refused. The Secret Service took full responsibility for the security breach and has placed three officers in leave in wake of the incident.

"This is not only a security issue," Schieffer said. "People being able to get into the White House and get up close to the president -- and who knows where that kind of thing goes, but this is also sort of an insult to the American people."

The Salahis were filmed by the television network Bravo in their preparations for the White House dinner, apparently for the upcoming television show "The Real Housewives of D.C." A state dinner, however, is more serious than a fancy party for socialites, Schieffer said on the Early Show.

"State dinners are part of the symbols of our democracy, like the White House itself, like the pledge of allegiance and the national anthem," he said. "And when people are making fun of those things, when they're doing what these people did, that's an insult to all of us. And if these people go to jail, that will be just fine with me."

America is the only place I know where we will hang a golfer but let a senator get by with his loss of morals.

Where is the video of Mr. Schieffer calling for prosecution of government officials for committing war crimes? I guess in Mr. Schieffer's insulated beltway world the more serious crime is crashing a party and having your photo taken with dignitaries, not the deliberate creation of an illegal government program where we tortured and killed people in our custody.

What kind of perverted thought process would allow someone to think that what the gate crashing Salahi's did was an insult to all of us but the creation of an officially sanctioned government program of torture was not?

If Mr. Schieffer really wants to talk about insulting the symbols of our Democracy he need look no further than his own profession. Every day that passes where our establishment media stands by and allows government officials to cover up the crimes of previous government officials without being challenged is an insult to our democracy. Equal justice under law is meaningless if we allow government officials to break our laws and treaties with no accountability whatsoever.

I don't what the complete story is...but, it's difficult to imagine that they JUST walked in!

It's more likely...they showed up...talked to Rogers...promised a donation if they were let in...problem was...the guest list was FINALIZED to the Secret Service, no changes at that point...she couldn't enter any changes on the list...so they were let in on her word! Problem is...it was discovered...and WH doesn't want to look bad...so Secret Service takes 'rap'.

Secret Service is 'low man' on govt totem pole in this affair...they're expected to 'fall on their swords' on this.

Personally, I'd come clean on this one and just admit what happened...it's NOT THAT big a deal! It's only a big deal because people are lying about it!

And, this is another reason our govt is failing so badly, because even trivial mistakes get lied about and covered up...and when you spend so much time on that type of activity, you can't get any positive, useful work done!

it's actually more likely that you know nothing of what your saying.

To bobnjersey:

'Bob', what's your problem? I prefaced my statements by saying, 'I don't know what the complete story is'...so, yes...I'm speculating. Are you so thin-skinned that you react to logical speculation?!

You know what? There would be NO speculation at all if all parties just came out and told the truth! Right?! Do you agree to at least that much?!

Don't worry! They will probably end up blaming some poor schmuck who doesn't deserve the blame to protect someone who does!

Why has this woman not been fired? The brave Secret Service have to take the fault for the incompetence of the White House. I feel for the brave members who have been placed on leave. This woman ought to have the guts to resign.

they weren't on the list ... and 'the brave ones' let them in. it has nothing to do w/ incompetence of the white house ... the secret service is tasked w/ protecting the president and ensuring only those that should have accesst to him have that access.

those who let someone in without proving they were invited should do the right thing and acknowledge their mistake ... which they have ... and that was the secret service.

Fire Secret Service head Sullivan. It happened on his watch. No excuses.

I feel like there is less danger from this couple. Then there is with Andy Stern visiting the white house 22 times. I feel like Andy Stern and SEIU is more of threat to the constitution.

Amen! I've said all along they should be prosecuted. If it had been anybody else, they would have been shackled, tackled and booked before they were even out of the White House. The fact that they do this all the time shows they are nothing but "publicity hounds". It's disgusting!

Bob: you are dead on with this one. But I'll go one step further:

Shame on Obama. Shame on him for allowing his ego to override common sense. He's protecting his old Chicago clique. The message is loud and clear: the office of the presidency is a social club. Delegations of other countries will be treated as socialites, not as heads of state. State dinners are to be glamorous photo-ops, no more serious or substantive than the Ascot Days Horse Races. I don't think this point has been lost on the rest of the world, who can hardly take our President seriously anymore.

I am ashamed to say I voted for this egomaniac bamboozler. The next three years are going to be nothing more than date nights with Michelle, fake photo ops ("Jobs Summit"), and cowtowing/deeply bowing/groveling to every dictator and king in the world. Disgusting.

Ole Bob sounds like he's auditioning from the "Andy Rooney mean old man" spot on 60 Minutes. As I see it, the Salahis went to the keepers of the gate and asked if they could come in. The keepers checked out their duds, ran them through a metal detector and said, "Sure!" There was no forged invitation or sneaking over the fence--and they did not even defraud an innkeeper by eating without paying. But ole Bob as come up with a real crank of a charge: insulting a state dinner occasion. Maybe instead of Rooney's slot, he should be transferred to join Rather.

Oh you, there's nothing at all insulting to heads of state when they are sharing dinner with someone being filmed for a "Real Morons of DC" episode.

I'm sure that sends a message of enormous credibility to the rest of the world when we extend an invite for talks. What's next, an episode of Fear Factor filmed on the grounds of Camp David? An episode of You Got Punk'd interrupting an arms reduction treaty conference with Russia?

Maybe that's the joke of a country you want to live in but not I. I actualy tend to think my grandfather fought the Nazis for reasons other than the right to broadcast any and every type of tomfoolery live from the White House.

what are you babbling about? the incident was a mistake made by the secret service ... and has nothing to do with a reality show ... or the obamas.

our credibility is already in the toilet ... has nowhere to go but up ... and also is not due at all to anything or anyone that obama has or has not bowed to.

are you ok w/ the orientation of his lapel flag pin ... since that's such an important criteria as well?

They need to be prosecuted, and what is the deal with Bravo? Rewarding people that break the law? Quit giving these people their 15 minutes of fame many times over.
