Amid recent violence abroad, poll shows Dems even with GOP on question of terrorism

(CBS News) Amid an ongoing investigation surrounding the recent violence in Libya and Egypt that resulted in the deaths of four Americans, a new poll from Gallup suggests that voters, for the first time since 2008, trust Democrats and Republicans equally on the matter of protecting the U.S. from international terrorism and military threats.

According to the poll, which was conducted September 6-9 - before Tuesday's attacks - 45 percent of voters believe Democrats will do a better job of protecting Americans from those threats; 45 percent said the same of Republicans.

The last time Democrats and Republicans were on equal footing on this question was in 2008, aside from moments in 2006 and 2007, Republicans have otherwise led on the question since 2002, when Gallup started asking the question.

In addition to ending the war in Iraq and setting a timeline to do the same in Afghanistan, President Obama has throughout his presidency focused heavily on veteran issues, and is making a hard pitch to build military and veteran support this fall. On the campaign trail, he and his surrogates have trumpeted the death of Osama bin Laden as a primary foreign policy achievement, and the campaign has continually pushed back against the notion that the president is soft on foreign policy.

Ryan sharpens criticism of Obama

The events in Libya, however, and the death of the U.S. ambassador to Libya, have provided Republicans with the opportunity to renew that debate and call the president's foreign policy credentials into question. Addressing the tragedy in a press conference yesterday, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney accused Mr. Obama of sending "mixed signals" to the world and standing "in apology" of American values.

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., the 2008 Republican presidential nominee and current ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, broadened that critique in a round of television appearances on Thursday morning.

Unlike Romney, McCain said Mr. Obama's response to the attacks in Libya and Egypt was "fine" -- but his Middle Eastern policy in general, he argued, is "feckless."

Questioned about the Egyptian embassy statement for which Romney targeted the Obama administration - which was in fact released before the protests which resulted in American deaths had begun, McCain told NBC News the statement was "weak" but, in a separate interview with ABC, he said he thought "it was fine."

"The statement as I understand it was issued before the news of Libya came out. It was a very weak statement entirely on the part of the embassy that does speak for the United States," McCain told NBC.

But of the president's foreign policy, McCain was more direct in his criticism.

''I'd like to see the president of the United States speak up once for the 20,000 people that are being massacred in Syria,'' he said on NBC, blasting the president for what he described as "a feckless foreign policy."

Despite some criticism of how Romney chose to address the violence, Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, Romney's running mate, continued to level similar attacks at the Obama administration on the campaign trail Wednesday.

"The administration sent mixed signals to those who attacked our embassy in Egypt, and mixed signals to the world," Ryan said during a campaign stop in Ohio. "I want to be clear; it is never too early for the United States to condemn attacks on Americans, on our properties, and to defend our values. That's what leadership is all about."

"Undercutting allies like Israel, outreach to enemies like Iran, national security leaks and devastating defense cuts," he said. "A weak America breeds insecurity and chaos around the world. The best guarantee of peace is American strength. And peace through strength will be the Romney/Ryan foreign policy of this country."

Back in the 'Nam I served under Tricky Dick. He was an old skool Republican. Now the new style RepubliCONs would say that Tricky was a RINO and run him out of the party. The RepubliCONs elected a bunch of draft dodgers like Dubya and Cheney to start wars in the Mid East that their own kids wouldn't lift a finger to fight. Now, post Dubya, the RepubliCONs have nominated the draft dodging Willard who, if elected, has done everything but promise Netanyahu in writing to start a war with Iran. Of course none of Willard's boys will serve either.

Negligence by republicans in the White House was the main reason why we were totally unprepared for the attack on 9-11-2001. Americans would feel a lot better if we had done somthing to prevent it from happening even if it still had happened. But we had done completely nothing despite numerous warnings from CIA and FBI to Bush and Rice on possible attacks. Instead they claimed that those warnings weren't specific enough. Were they waiting for a call from Osama bin Laden to confirm that?

The trouble with Al Queda started during the Clinton administration NOT the Bush administration and they did nothing either!

(CBS News) Eleven years after the 9/11 attacks, there is new information on what the George W. Bush administration knew about al-Qaeda's plans.

Tuesday in the New York Times, investigative reporter Kurt Eichenwald says the White House received ominous warnings as early as May 2001.

CBS News spoke with Eichenwald Monday. He said, "What I've been able to see are the presidential daily briefs before August 6 of 2001. And they're horrific, and they are - our reports are 'an attack is coming,' 'there are going to be mass casualties.' The worst of them, the Pentagon, the neo-conservatives at the Pentagon, as the CIA was coming in saying, 'al-Qaeda's going to attack,' said, 'Oh, this is just a false flag operation. Bin laden is trying to take our attention off of the real threat, Iraq.' And so there are presidential daily briefs that are literally saying, 'No they're wrong, this isn't fake, it's real.'"

Eichenwald replied, "Actually, the counterterrorist center of the CIA did a spectacular job, and that's what really comes down. You know, in the aftermath, the White House and others said, 'Well they didn't tell us enough.' No, they told them everything they needed to know to go on a full alert and the White House didn't do it."

George Bush was asleep at the wheel.....and the rest is history.

Pres. Obama created more jobs 4.6 million in 2 1/2 years than Bush did in 8 years. And just recently in the news there was more evidence that Bush new from May 2001 that there was going to be an attack on the US but was not taking it seriously because he was concentrating on invading Iraq.

I think you are telling a whopper about the 4.6 million jobs. Probably the truth is he hasn't created a fourth of that many! Also Obama trashed hundreds of jobs when he turned down the northern leg of the Keystone pipeline! You libs thought we'd forgotten about that one didn't you?
RollotheNorman replies:

Well I see you RepubliCONs finally got the Keystone number of jobs correct - hundreds, not a hundred thousand. And yeah goat is right, the Dept. of Labor keeps records, they're open to all. Job creation started about 30 months ago and their have been 4.6 jobs created since, NO THANKS TO the RepubliCON Congress, BTW.

The reason it appears that the Democrats are as good as Bush and The Gop at protecting the US from terrorism is because Bush set up all the Homeland Security, Patriot Act and the rest of the War on Terrorism and now Obama is using them to look good and take credit for GW's and the Republicans hard work.
They ungrateful cretins on the left never gave Bush the credit due him.

P.S. That hard work and Intel was what let the US get Osama.

Bush dragged his feet for more than a year on Homeland. He put Ridge in there with no power and nothing but a color chart. Congress had to force Bush into Homeland and when he finally did, the organization chart looked like a bowl of spaghetti.

Lucas, that is all GOP hogwash and proaganda. You can say anything and make it sound believeable, but the facts remain what they are. Bush and Rice knew what was coming and chose to ignore it... perhaps to make Bush a wartime pres to ensire his re-election because they knew he was too incompetent to get re-elected on his own. His favorablity rating was already in the dumpster by 9/11. As far as OBL is concerend, Bush could not get him and so said he was not worth getting (he is on record saying that). Obama got him by issuing an order to get it done. Finances? We have gained jobs since Obama's 4th month after bleeding jobs all during Bush. And Obama has done it smoothly and surely during petulant Rep obstructionism. Imagin saying the number one goal of the GOP was not jobs, but defeating the incumbent... traitorous

The attack on 9/11 was planned for several years. The Clinton administration knew about Al Queda and knew that they were planning something but they ignored them!

When republicans say that they will bring killers to justice, what they really means, that American People are going to pay for more pentagon expanses. They will add trillions are new dollars to budget, and create companies what they will hire to take this money out. They never have the interest of the country in heart, rather how to exploit the situation to make more money.

In fact here is another example where President has shown wisdom, and called for hasty actions. When he says that the killers will be punished, it reminds me God Father, where I know this person is going to back his words with steps that he will take in future.

When I said, it reminds me God Father, I did not mean that the President is God Father. Rather as in the movie God Father, he backed his words with actions, the president has done the same. Whenever someone threatens American Security like this, under his leadership that group has paid. Just ask Osama bin Laden
