What to watch at the Democratic convention Tuesday

(CBS News) CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Democratic National Convention officially gets started Tuesday with a keynote address from San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro and a speech by First Lady Michelle Obama.

Here's a look at what to expect from the festivities, which will be streamed live on CBSNews.com.

San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro's keynote address, 10 p.m. ET

Castro, 37, is in his second term as mayor of the nation's seventh-largest city after easily winning re-election in 2011 with nearly 82 percent of the vote. The Obama campaign notes that his life story in many ways mirrors President Obama's: He and his identical twin brother Joaquin Castro came from modest beginnings and relied on scholarships, grants and loans to attend Stanford University and then Harvard Law School.

A senior campaign official told CBS News that Castro's keynote address will share that personal story "and reflect on the things we need to do as a country to create more Julian Castros, more Barack Obamas to ensure that every young person across this country can achieve their dreams."

Castro's star is rising within the Democratic party at the same time that Democrats are starting to see potential to turn Texas into a blue state, due to the growing Hispanic community. While Texas is for now a solidly Republican state when it comes to presidential politics, the Hispanic community will play a key role in swing states like Colorado and Nevada this year.

First Lady Michelle Obama serves as a "character witness," 10:30 p.m. ET

First Lady Michelle Obama will serve as a "character witness" for her husband, according to the Obama campaign. She will speak, a senior campaign official said, "not just about who the president is, but the values that motivate him."

Mrs. Obama will testify about the "tough decisions" that Mr. Obama made, like pushing through health care reform and backing the auto bailout. And after traveling the country and seeing tangible results, the campaign says, she can also testify to the ways in which those decisions have paid off.

Tuesday's program begins at 5 p.m. ET and also includes speeches by former President Jimmy Carter (who will address the convention via video) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a video tribute to the late Sen. Ted Kennedy, Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee (a former Republican who is now an independent), Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, actor Kal Penn, President Obama's sister Maya Soetoro-Ng and Michelle Obama's brother Craig Robinson.

Most in my family are Liberals and they are wonderful people. I don't just love them. I have a genuine respect for their work ethic, kindness, intelligence and understanding. I would say my views are Libertarian but with some caveats. My brother and father have worked blue collar jobs 60 hours a week all their lives and would not take a penny from anyone. Still, it does not bother them at all that so many people are living off of welfare, disability, section 8 housing, or other programs. My brother has agreed that unchecked immigration will completely alter the country and lower our standard of living in a few decades. This is a man with two daughters, and once again he is not concerned. These folks would never steal anything, and would not hurt a flea. But they are pro-abortion, and against capital punishment. If pressed on their views, they will all but acknowledge the contradictions. This has led me to accept that liberalism is in fact a faith. It is a belief system. It has a certain dogma that all followers adhere to. At some point in the person's life they became convinced that it is the truth, and it became a part of them. As with all believers, any arguments to the contrary are dismissed as ridicules, or are minimized as unimportant, but there is no longer any serious consideration of the faith. If you view Liberalism through this prism, all of their beliefs and behavior start to make sense. We would view it as foolishness to try to reason someone out of their religion, and this is my advice for handling liberal family. Their beliefs do not flow from their minds, but from their hearts.

You can always tell the Romney/Ryan/Republican/Tparty posts here. They sound stupid, they have not facts, there is a complete discontent from reality, and they are filled with hate for no rational reason other then ignorance.

Why do they hate Obama: because he saved the country from a depression caused by Bush and the Republicans; he killed Bin laden; he got healthcare for 30 million people; he gave tax cuts to the middle class; he freed libya for 2 billion dollars and no lost American Lives compared to the trillion dollar Republican fiasco in Iraq; protected woman, gays, workers, seniors rights; protected the environment; and thinks the wealthy, like the draft dodging Romney should actually pay as much taxes as working people... the list goes on and on. There is simply no rational reason for their hate other then stupidity, ignorance, hypocrisy, and bigotry.

Obama did a great job to turn the US around. He should talk about his record more. From losing 800k job a month to getting an average of 150k job gain a month is a huge difference.

The debt is not something that can be fix in one term with this type of economy. Period. People think that 1.2 trillion annual debt that Obama inherited will magically disappear on the following year. I tell you this, cutting 1.2 trillion in a 15 trillion economy will spell "DOOM". We will be losing 800k job a month for another year if that happened.
