Ann Romney needles convention planners, promises "heartfelt" speech

(CBS News) TAMPA, Fla. - A spirited Ann Romney arrived in Tampa late Tuesday morning, expressing excitement at her opportunity to introduce her husband to millions of Americans - and humorous surprise at adviser Stuart Stevens and other planners over their strong interest over what she'll wear for her convention speech.

"Frankly, I didn't realize that Stuart had to weigh in on this - or my husband," she told reporters on a charter flight from Bedford, Mass., to Tampa. "It was going to be like my wedding night; I wasn't going to let him know what I was going to wear. But now they have opinions."

Offering a glimpse at the message she hopes to portray in her speech, Ann Romney said it will be "heartfelt." She said she hopes voters will consider "how important this election's going to be, and how important it's going to be for them to consider the right things to make their right decisions."

She frequently introduces her husband on the campaign trail. But tonight she will use a teleprompter to deliver her remarks, something she acknowledged not being entirely comfortable with.

Republican Convention 2012: complete coverage

"This is a unique experience for me, to actually have something written because I've never used it," she told reporters. "No one has ever written a speech for me, no one has ever, I've never given anything off a sheet ... so I had a lot of input in this, I must say. And a lot of tweaking where I felt like I was getting what I really wanted to say from my heart."

The presumed Republican nominee and his wife both spent the past two days practicing their speeches at a New Hampshire prep school. Ann Romney joked that she had practiced her speech enough recently that it had been "reduced to a tweet," and so decided to take time to do something she loves - baking.

"These are my grandmother's recipe, Welsh cakes," she explained as she passed a red tin of the round pastries among the press corps. "The funniest thing is my one grandmother was a great cook, the Welsh grandmother was a terrible cook, and I never liked her Welsh cakes growing up and I've learned how to make them in such a way that they're much more moist and delicious."

Pretty sneaky but good of the GOP convention to
get Romney nominated before primetime TV
starts. I turned in with Kansas and I am
glad I didn't miss the big moment.
Good Luck Mitt and Paul.
Not even the DC local big 3 CBS, NBC
or ABC had coverage of that special
event. I bet their faces are red.

Yep we used to have Cal Smith and his Iguana spot advertise used cars here in Houston, after he was chased out of CA. Ann is bound to be a least as good a salesperson as was Cal's Iguana. HaHa, HoHo, HeHe McCain got a 6-7% bounce off his show in '08, anybody want to bet Willard gets less than 3%?

Extremely vile in the sense that she has the best medical care money can buy, but her and her husband have vowed to pull healthcare away from millions.

Her and her husband want to privatize Medicare and Social Security. And reduce protections for clean air and water.

That's vile.

So, now if you work hard all your life, make good life choices, provide for your family a nice home and the best healthcare money can by, you are vile?

Oh well, who believed in the American Dream anyway...to bad...so sad.

Just more and more lies with no facts to back it up.

If you are going to make such outlandish statements, please use facts to back up your empty rhetoric.

Will be waiting for the facts....

What is truly vile is making accusations that can never be proven.

You are a big fat liar.

Who the hell cares about John Kerry?

Jesus.. get with the program.

Should we not apply the same standards for both sides?

Or let's ask how Michelle Obama got a job working in the Chicago Hospital for almost $400K, without any experience, shortly after Barack Obama was elected to the Illinois State Senate?

Deficit when Jimmy Carter left office; $1 Trillion.
Ronnie Ray Gun, who was President of the Screen Actors Guild, before he was against unions, ran up $5 Trillion in deficits while cutting taxes for the rich, deregulating the financial system and then bailing out the S&L's and Chrysler with taxpayer money causing the Wall Street crash of 1987 and 10% unemployment.

Debt is created by over spending, when you have %5 unemployment federal revenues increase, just as they almost double for President Reagan.

Lying wot get the women's vote even if Ann cries. Look she married and quickly had back to back babies and continued. She is still a stay at home Mom of grown kids with families of their own. Barbara Bush had a miscarriage and never used it for pity. Ann will say any heart breaking story for votes but forgets her husband will end health care/rights to women. Some Republican States arrest wommen who have a miscarriage as Ann is lucky her husband is wealthy enough to make sure it never happens to her. Her health problems will be talked about as women will not get breast cancer screening and will likely died. Yes Ann is the 2012 June Cleaver from 50's show Leave it to Beaver. Ann will show her pearls and white gloves. Mitt could really use a Republican trail blazer like Lenore Romney who was a stay at home Mom until her kids grew up, fought with the womens rights movement and even ran for US Senate. Now Lenore would get the attention of women today as much of her work allowed for women to hold elected positions today. But Ann will just lie and hope people believe the bull.

If she were sincere, then she would advocate for middle class pay that would allow for a parent to be able to provide for the family, instead of the both-parent/multiple-job scenario we have now.

Ann is a June Cleaver-wannabe, who entered into wealth and for all we know has no knowledge or experience of what the masses of this country, the working/middle classes, have to endure.

Or she would advocate getting a education and working hard to provide for their families like her and her husband did, instead of living off the government like the poor do.

You are clueless about how they lived to begin their lives together.

there is something very wrong with the people who are leaving such vicious comments on this website. Ann Romney is a fine woman - yes she is rich, because her husband worked hard and made a lot of money - is that something to be ashamed of? I don't think so, that's one of the American dreams. She has raised a large family and has successful battled two extremely debilatating illnesses. You should all be ashammed of yourselves - no wonder this country is in such a mess.

And her speech in support of Willard will be as heartfelt as any used-car saleswoman. As for Willard, would you buy a used car from this man?

Norman just proved your point on why this country is where it is today.

I would much prefer to buy a car from someone with real world driving experience, that has had success all his life, than someone who has never driving a car in the first place.

Romney's wife on tax releases: 'We've given all you people need to know'

(CBS News) As Democrats press Mitt Romney to release a more extensive picture of his tax history, a new report from the Los Angeles Times suggests that Romney and his wife Ann made multiple attempts to have the value of one of their multimillion dollar homes reassessed, which allowed them to save on property taxes on the house.
According to the Times, the Romneys paid $12 million in cash for a beach-front house in La Jolla, California, in 2008. Just seven months later, the couple appealed to San Diego County for the house to be reassessed at a value of $6.8 million. A little more than a year later, they amended that appeal to $8.9 million, after hiring an attorney. In the 2010 tax year, the Romneys requested a reduction in value to $7.5 million.

Have we seen John Kerry wife's tax returns yet?

Hundreds of thousands of people attempt to get have their homes values reassessed. Millions of people are paying taxes on property that is listed much more than what it is actually worth.

If the value of property goes down every year, so should your tax liability.
